Lesson 2 - Safety in the Alchemy Field

Chapter 2

What do we need for this course?

  • A wand

  • Dragonhide gloves

  • goggles

  • face mask

  • closed-toe shoes

Why do we need a wand?

  • to practice transmuting spells

  • essential for most productive magical products

  • Help establish any magical ailments in the chemicals or elements

Dragonhide Gloves?

  • protect hands from becoming harmed or injured due to chemicals

  • some chemicals can cause blisters, burns and severe pains

  • dragonskin is impermeable. It is so powerful that spells barely have an effect and sharp objects don't penetrate through.

Goggles?

  • the fumes in Alchemy can harm our eyes

  • we could suffer from vision loss and intense burning

  • the googles are enchanted to get rid of mist and water.

The Spell

Name: Water-Repelling Charm

Incantation: Impervius (im-PUR-vee-us)

Wand: envision a backwards 4 shape. Start from the left, drag to the right go up diagonally to the left and then bring the wand straight back down.

Face mask?

  • can cause serious harm when fumes are inhaled

  • what could happen: hallucinations, difficulty breathing, dizziness, coughing up blood, severe abdominal pains, chest pain, vomiting blood, rapid heart rate.

Closed-toed shoes?

  • chemicals can spill

  • can suffer from serious injuries or permanent change

If there is a spillage or breakage you:

  • step away and tell the professor immediately

  • make sure that the chemical is always written down

  • always read the labels

If something is spilt on someone else :

  • find the source of the affected area

  • wipe the chemical away using the cleaning charm (down below)

  • Apply dittany to the affected area.

  • Wrap the wound up and see a healer

  • If there is no dittany, ask the herbology or potions teacher

Spell Practice:

Name: Chemical Cleaning Charm

Incantation: Tergeo (ter-GEE-oh)

Wand: point the tip of the wand at the affected area

  • if performed correctly a white mist will surround the wound and heal

  • if incorrect do not touch the affected student or object
