Potions: Week 1

Chapter 1

  • It is important to note that only a Witch or Wizard should ever ingest or apply a Potion, regardless of the circumstances. Muggle exposure to Potions typically causes unusual and even deadly reactions. (They do NOT experience the same effects as wizards).
  • Potions were being brewed even before the International Statue of Secrecy was enacted in 1689.
  • Ancient Muggle and Wizard accounts often speak of shamans and priests creating Love Potions and similar products for Muggles to use. Most likely these were either lust-related Potions, or were concoctions involving mundane ingredients that caused a certain lustful reaction in those who imbibed them.
  • The term “Snake Oil Salesman” still applies to those Muggles who intentionally sell goods with false information about their effectiveness, particularly “Cure-All” liquid remedies of no use. (Basically someone that sells fraudulent goods).
  • Due to the long separation from true Potions and their effects, what little capacity Muggles may have had for processing Potions to provide any sort of cure has long disappeared. To use a mundane example of how this process works in reverse, consider our consumption of lactose, or the predominant sugar in raw milk. In the time of the Ancient Egyptians, humans did not have a tolerance for lactose, and their digestive systems were unable to process it. However, today 35% of the world population is said to be able to digest lactose. (Lactose is an example of humans building a tolerance to something over a long period of exposure)
SAFETY IN THE POTIONS CLASS:
  • Wear close-toed shoes. Pin your hair back and remove any dangling jewellery.
  • Never work ahead, even when you have the instructions. ALWAYS WAIT FOR THE TEACHER.
  • No pranks
  • If you see someone else have an accident, do not immediately run to help them. (Fetch the Professor immediately and do not interfere).
  • Never directly dip your wand into your cauldron or point it directly at someone else.
