Chapter 9

"That's like, a really dumb name."

Lily laughed. Not her sad laugh, the one I heard a few minutes ago. No, the happy and sweet laugh, the one I'm used to.

"I know. So dramatic."

"Can they tell the future?" I ask, referring to the 'prophet' part.

"I have no idea."

So. Maybe it was more like Lily and I were gonna find out stuff together, and perhaps the ghosts like her more, but who really cares. I mean, they're ghosts.

We talked and walked back to my house. It was more casual now, less serious. I felt less alone. Summer's weird. Long-awaited but lonely.

"You think you're gonna go to the orphanage?" I didn't want to go, really. I was fine in my small house in San Francisco, with my mom and my aunt and uncle and my brother. And maybe the ghost of my cousin, depending on what happens.

Lily shrugged. "I don't know. If they tell me where it is. If not, then who cares, SF is where everything is for me."

I was glad I had gotten to know Lily better. She's nicer than I would've thought. Has a lot of interesting thoughts, ones that I never would have discovered had I stayed quiet.

We reach my house and she hugs me goodbye.

"Sorry again. For waking you up at five and changing your life."

"It happens all the time, don't worry about it."

Lily laughs again and leaves me to enter my house and figure out what just happened, andy why I feel so happy even though my brain hurts from everything she told me.
