Chapter 8
"So?"
"What do you mean so?!"
"Why does it matter? I don't like them."
Lily was distraught.
"I...I care about them. That stage, it's part of death."
"What would we even do about it?" I asked, dubious.
"There's a...place. For people like us."
I frowned. "What do we even call ourselves?"
She shrugged. "People who might be crazy but also might be more sane than anyone."
"That sounds right. What is this place? A school?"
"No." Lily's voice slowed down and grew more hesitant, as if wondering what she should call it. "More like...an orphanage?"
One moment I'm mad about some kid in the corner store and the next I'm talking with my best friend at seven in the morning about orphanages for people who see ghosts.
My life really went downhill fast.
"How do you know?" Why doese she get everything handed to her and I have to find out at seven?
"They told me everything. Except, like, where the orphanage is and why me specificly can see them and why any of this is happening at all."
"So, not everything."
Lily shook her head. "Not even close."
"Does this orphanage have a name?"
She thought for a moment. Maybe searching through all that information the ghosts left her and not me.
Oh I'm mad.
I'm mad at the ghosts, for letting me think I was crazy. I'm mad at Lily and how much she knows, and I'm mad that Rory had to go.
And I'm mad at this whole power because I want to be normal and I already look different. I don't want some super vision ghost power. I want to fit in.
Lily interruptes my seething, which is a relief because I really hate being mad.
