"Oh my god, are you even listening to me? Why can't you just leave me alone?"

heard Jackie say anything like that. 

Context:

Me and Jackie have some mean friends. And I'm talking like, Mean Girls mean. We all met in 6th grade, and it's the end of the year and Jackie just decided to say something like that. To Lizzie.

Jackie started walking away. I look at her and then back at my friends. I shook my head a little bit, a 'I'm sorry but I can't leave her' kind of shake. 

I ran in Jackie's direction. I found her crying in the school garden. 

"Jackie..." I started.

She shook her head and sniffed loudly. I sat next to her.

"What..." I don't know where to start. "You-you're not leaving, are you?"

"I don't kn-know." She sniffed again. "Can you-can you give me space?"

I hesitated. My gut said no. I trusted it. "Just talk to me. Please."

She sighed. "I can't...I can't keep pretending what they say doesn't bother me."

"What do they say?" 

"Stuff about you. And Lily. And me. When they see me, they don't care. They keep talking." She raised her head and wiped her eyes. "How did we get into this mess? We're not like them. And neither is Lily, but she won't admit it." That I knew the answer to.

"I didn't want to be alone. You?" She nodded. 

Jackie cried a little more and I put an arm around her. 

"I'm not going anywhere." I whispered to her. 

Jackie had always been so sweet.
