"Come on." Marelyn waved for us to follow after everyone had finished eating and stood up to go

to go wherever they're going.

I looked at Lily with utter exhaustion, because we still weren't done with this lady and I really needed another nap. Her face mirrored mine.

We walked down another hall, like how many halls does this place have? And then through my secend secret door today.

They really like their secrets.

The room was practically an office. Just, really old. It looked like it belonged in a museum. It was quite cramped. A desk was in the middle. The walls were lined with bookshelves, which were filled with books. There was a lot on stars and death. Not,

that weird

right?

Marelyn went behind her desk and pulled out an ancient, leather-bound book. She flipped past dozen of pages with names on them. Like passports. Or documents. All scrawled in the same, old-timey cursive handwriting.

She pointed at me. "Name."

Taken by surprise, I stuttered a little bit. "O-uh-Odila."

"Last Name."

"Roe."

She wrote something, and then pointed at Lily without looking up.

"Lily Ava-Marie."

Another note. 

"I didn't know that was your last name." I said to her. 

"It's my mom's mom and my dad's mom's name together."

'Weird. It's pretty." We fell silent as Marelyn wrote more things down and left us to fend for ourselves in the awkwardness of the pause. 

The Countess put her book away and looked at us with her hands folded under her chin. I felt like this was a buisness meeting, and we should sit down, but there was no other chairs.

"I haven't taken a novice in over twenty years."

"Makes sense." I respond. She looks at me, and I regret saying that immediatly. "I, um, they were talking." Something is mentally wrong with you.

"I see." I couldn't tell what Marelyn was thinking. I really hate that. Lily is trying not to laugh. I'm trying not to curl up and die. 

"Why us?" She asked. Yes, please, get to another topic before my face is oficially identified as a tomato.

Marelyn took a while to gather her thoughts. "Do you know what an aura is?"

Lily said yes at the same time I said no. 

"Astrology and auras." I say.

"Yep."

"Spiritual."

Marelyn coughed. We straightened and turned back to her.

"Well, I can see them. You," She pointed at me. "Yours is celadon."

"Uh, what?"

"It's a pale green-ish blue." Oh, too many questions. That's a button pusher. My brain is like a filing cabinent. So I stuffed that into a little drawer and focused on the conversation.

She turned to Lily.

"Wait, don't tell me!" She said. "What does it look like?"

Marelyn's eyebrows scruntched up in confusion but looked inpressed. I get annoyed but bite my tounge. 

"It's like a shadow." Lily nodded. She was fully immersed in Marelyn. And to think a few minutes ago we both disliked her. Now it's just me. And I still don't know what a freaking aura is.

The Countess sighed and looked at a grandfather clock shoved inbetween two bookshelves. "Here, tomorrow morning. We have more things that need more time." Lily, dissapointed, nodded. We both left and headed to our room.

"Do you remember where our room is?"

I gave her a look. "Yes. Do you not?"

"Uh,"

We laughed together.

"You and her seem to get along."

"Please. Remember this?" She raised her arm so I could see her wrist. The tattoo was a planet inside of a crystal ball.

I looked at mine. "Thought they were different." I muttered. I get nervous because if everybody was a different one than this tattoo means something about me. Something I don't particularly want to know.

Lily grabbed my hand and I raised my gaze to her eyes. I think she knew I was freaking out. "We'll be okay."

And I believed her.

Until someone's scream pierced the air like a rock hitting a still lake.
