Chapter 12
On the day that the kids at Hogwarts finished their OWL exams, something very, very terrible happened. Harry thought that Sirius had been caught by Voldemort and was being tortured, so he rushed to the ministry of magic, with Ron, Hermione, Neville, Luna and Ginny, to help Sirius, but it turned out that Voldemort had tricked him. Sirius was fine and it was all a trap. Sirius wasn’t there, but death eaters were. Somehow, Harry managed not to get killed by the death eaters, and managed to keep the prophecy from them. The prophecy was the reason that Voldemort had tricked him, it was something that Voldemort wanted and it was what the death eaters were trying to get. Sirius, Remus, Tonks, Kingsley and Moody rushed to help Harry and the others when they heard what had happened. When they got there, Neville and Harry were the only 2 of the kids left. The others had been either knocked out, broken their leg or got hit with a weird curse. Harry was surrounded and the death eaters had Neville when the adults found them.
Malfoy turned, and raised his wand, but Tonks had already sent a Stunning Spell right at him. Harry did not wait to see whether it had made contact, but dived off the dais out of the way. The Death Eaters were completely distracted by the appearance of the members of the Order, who were now raining spells down upon them as they jumped from step to step towards the sunken floor. Sirius started duelling a death eater. As Dolohov raised his wand again at Harry and said. 'Accio proph--'
Sirius hurtled out of nowhere, rammed Dolohov with his shoulder and sent him flying out of the way. The prophecy had again flown to the tips of Harry's fingers but he had managed to cling on to it. Now Sirius and Dolohov were duelling, their wands flashing like swords, sparks flying from their wand-tips--
Dolohov drew back his wand to make the same slashing movement he had used on Harry and Hermione. Springing up, Harry yelled, 'Petrificus Totalus!' Once again, Dolohov's arms and legs snapped together and he keeled over backwards, landing with a crash on his back.
'Nice one!' shouted Sirius, forcing Harry's head down as a pair of Stunning Spells flew towards them. 'Now I want you to get out of--'
They both ducked again; a jet of green light had narrowly missed Sirius. Tonks fell halfway up the stone steps, her limp form toppling from stone seat to stone seat and Bellatrix, triumphant, running back towards the fray.
'Harry, take the prophecy, grab Neville and run!' Sirius yelled, dashing to meet Bellatrix. Malfoy smashed into the dais on which Sirius and Bellatrix were now duelling. Malfoy aimed his wand at Harry and Neville again, but before he could draw breath to strike, Remus had jumped between them.
'Harry, round up the others and GO!'
Harry seized Neville by the shoulder of his robes and lifted him bodily onto the first tier of stone steps; Suddenly, Dumbledore appeared and sped down the steps past Neville and Harry, who had no more thoughts of leaving. Dumbledore was already at the foot of the steps when the Death Eaters nearest realised he was there and yelled to the others. One of .the Death Eaters ran for it, scrabbling like a monkey up the stone steps opposite. Dumbledore's spell pulled him back as easily and effortlessly as though he had hooked him with an invisible line--Only one pair was still battling, apparently unaware of the new arrival. Sirius ducked Bellatrix's jet of red light: he was laughing at her.
'Come on, you can do better than that!' he yelled, his voice echoing around the cavernous room.
The second jet of light hit him squarely on the chest.
The laughter had not quite died from his face, but his eyes widened in shock.
Harry released Neville, though he was unaware of doing so. He was jumping down the steps again, pulling out his wand, as Dumbledore, too, turned towards the dais.
It seemed to take Sirius an age to fall: his body curved in a graceful arc as he sank backwards through the ragged veil hanging from the arch.
Harry saw the look of mingled fear and surprise on his godfather's wasted, once-handsome face as he fell through the ancient doorway and disappeared behind the veil, which fluttered for a moment as though in a high wind, then fell back into place.
Harry heard Bellatrix Lestrange's triumphant scream, but knew it meant nothing--Sirius had only just fallen through the archway, he would reappear from the other side any second ...
But Sirius did not reappear.
'SIRIUS!' Harry yelled. 'SIRIUS!'
He had reached the floor, his breath coming in searing gasps. Sirius must be just behind the curtain, he, Harry, would pull him back out ...
But as he reached the ground and sprinted towards the dais, Remus grabbed Harry around the chest, holding him back.
'There's nothing you can do, Harry--'
'Get him, save him, he's only just gone through!'
'--it's too late, Harry.'
'We can still reach him--' Harry struggled hard and viciously, but Remus would not let go ...
'There's nothing you can do, Harry ... nothing ... he's gone.'
Sirius had died, but had saved Harry by getting to the ministry and because of what happened there, everyone finally believed that Voldemort was back and that Harry had not been lying. Everyone (especially Harry and Remus) missed Sirius terribly, but when Sirius had fallen through the veil, he had gone to the afterworld where he would see James and Lily again and everyone else who had died and when Harry dies, he will see Sirius again.
