Lesson #1 Charms

Chapter 2

For year 1, my charms professor has assigned me to keep a journal so here's some important points and notes from my first charms lesson!

The Olivanders family:

  • making wand since 382 B.C.E.

  • first and longest wandmakers

The government:

  • starting from 1000 C.E.

  • wizarding world began separating from the muggle world

  • the Council of Warlocks ruled for 400 years till 1400 C.E.

  • various magical governments were established after that based on the ethic and cultural values, as well as location

  • there are seperate Ministry of Magic in different countries as well

The Interntional Statute of Secrecy:

  • established in 1689

  • completed the separation  of the two worlds

  • to protect both the magical and non-magical communities from each other

  • each government became responsible for hiding all evidence of magical activities within their borders, including magical flora and fauna

  • even though the law was signed in 1689, it took another three years before being officially established by all governments internationally

The Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery:

  • established in 1875

  • no students are allowed to practice magic outside of school under the age of 17

  • exceptions only when there are life threatening situations to yourself, a fellow witch/wizard, or a fellow muggle

  • attempts to break the law will result in severe punishments

  • there is the trace on witches and wizards under the age of 17

  • will be immediately detected using the trace if underage sorcery is performed outside of prohibited area

  • traceable in both wizarding and muggle homes

The Discovery of Wands

  • before wands were discovered, magic was not always taught or controlled

  • some lead relatively normal lives while others caused great destruction

  • ancients wands were made out of lead wood

  • other primitive tools such as crystals, crude wand made of a little hippogriff wing feather wrapped around a stick and metal rods allowed some to control their magic to a certain level

The Wand Lighting Charm:

  • first demonstrated in 1772

  • it can light the tip of your wand

  • can provide and endless source amusement for young witches and wizards with its colour change

  • safe and easy method to cast a vote

  • can also be used to repel incoporeal threats and other malevolent spirits

Incantation: Lumos

Wand movement: Single counter-clockwise loop

Willpower: Low; determines the colour of the light

Concentration: Low; lighting the top of your wand

  • too little willpower and concentration would cause it to go pearly white

  • aim for a nice light yellow coloured light

  • different circumstances will call for a weaker or stronger light

The Wand-Extinguishing Charm:

Incantation: Nox

Wand movement: Flick of the wand

Willpower: None

Concentration: None

  • no harm of backlash, making it a very safe charm to perform

That's all the notes i have for today! Hope this helped :)
