The Ruins
Chapter 1
I am wandering the desolate wasteland, looking for pre war artifacts, and come across another prospector searching through the ruins. there is a sound like snapping twigs and the crumbling of stones near one very big chunk of ruin and there is a small creature that looks like a scale covered human attempting to start a fire, unaware of your presence I approach the creature I see with caution, and call out "hello?" as I step over a small pile of rubble. the creature looks up startled and jumps back bearing 2 rows of razor sharp teeth It says "wh-who iss" in a deep gravelly voice "ahh!" I remark as I stumble back. I hold my hand over my back pocket, ready to draw my 9mm if need be. "I am just a traveler, I mean you no harm . You?" the creature looks skeptically and says "gordo reliving past, gordo used to live here 'till 'just travelers' burned it down" he pulls out a rusty and beaten plasma knife and points it towards you "How you different?!" again revealing his teeth "woah woah!" I yell. "no need for violence!" I say as I back away even further from the ruins. "How are you different?!!" gordo repeats slowly but powerfully "Here... take my pistol, I don't have any intention to harm you so I don't need it." I say as I pull out my pistol and throw it onto the ground in front of me. gordo cautiously moves toward the gun not lowering his knife. he tensely kicks it to the side and asks, "Why are you here 'traveler'?"
"I am here looking for anything of the age before the war, or advanced technology hidden within ruins like these" "all gordo's technology was destroyed, but he might join you in search of technology, because all of his things are gone!" gordo finishes angrily "you can stay for t'night then begin our journey t'morrow" he goes to grab the pistol he takes the pistol and tosses it to you, then he sits on the sandy ground and continues his attempt to create a fire I pickup my handgun and sit down next to the creature calling itself gordo. "i'm not very good at starting a fire, but maybe i can help you?" I ask. "yes, hold this" he says tossing a steel rod toward you "hold it steady" I do as gordo says, and grip the rusty steel rod firmly. gordo strikes a flint ring on the rod repeatedly until a spark comes and light the bone dry log lying on the sand. gordo hurries and grabs a few more logs and eventually there is a large fire going gordo sits by the fire, clearly in deep thought "quite the impressive fire!" I exclaim, "where did you learn to do that?" gordo looks up, thoughts interrupted "my father loved learning survival skills" he smiles at the memory "and he taught me all he new" he continued to stare at the fire back in his thoughts I leave him to his thoughts and pull out a sleeping bag from my backpack and lay it down next to the fire, as well as pick up a few sticks to kindle it. as day becomes night gordo lies down upon the hard sandy ground looking longingly at the sleeping bag that his partner is lying in, he slowly falls into deep sleep I leave gordo be and let the crackling of the flames lull me to sleep. it becomes day, as gordo wakes first and puts out the fire as he waits for his partner to wake I yawn and crawl out of my sleeping bag to find the fire fizzling out. "Hello 'traveler', it is time for us to leave" a sad smile comes across his face and he turns away from the ruins for the last time. I pack up my sleeping bag back into my pack and munch on a ration as I follow gordo. "So where do you want to go?" I ask "we must leave this desert and find the ruins of the city, which means it's south to the marshlands" says gordo and the thing he had been trying to hide was now visible, a large scar running down the length of his calf, but he doesn't notice "I have never heard of such a city." I say, "but perhaps we can find something there." gordo smiles "you never knew of the city lost in battle, it is old and was destroyed over the many wars it started. but it has and had the best technology" gordo now frowns "which means other people will go there too..." "just be careful" I follow gordo along the road to the city and we continue until I spot a small valley in the distance. gordo follows your eye and says "a good place to rest" and he turns and walks toward the valley as the sun begins to set.
