Once Harry's parents were killed he was left with nothing but a lighting scar upon his forehead. He went to live with his aunt Petunia and Uncle veron and cousin Dudley. Two words, stupid Muggles. The muggles treated him horribly and he had to live under the stairs. Now once his hogwarts letter came he wasn't able to read it because of the muggles.
