Defense Against the Dark Art

Spells learnt

Spell : The Wand-Lighting Charm
Incantation : Lumos (LOO-mos)
Wand Movement: A counter-clockwise loop
Concentration : Low - lighting up the tip of your wand
Willpower : Low

Spell : The Wand-Extinguishing Charm
Incantation : Nox (NOCK-ss)
Wand Movement: A flick of the wand
Concentration : None
Willpower : None

Types of Dark Arts
- Dark spells
- Dark potions
- Dark creatures
- Dark Artefacts
- Dark practices

Three Spell Categories
- Jinx



  • First and lowest level of Dark spells

  • Will not cause much harm

  • Considered to be more of a minor irritation than a serious problem

  • Can be used as a distraction

  • Will not cause any lasting damage.


- Hex



  • Second level of Dark spells

  • A bit darker than the jinx

  • Will do more lasting damage than jinxes

  • Have effects that cause more damage to the target and are viewed as major inconveniences that cause a moderate amount of suffering.

  • Can be reversed by using a Hex Breaker.


- Curse



  • Third and final level of Dark spells

  • Darkest and most dangerous type of spell

  • Usually cast with the intent to severely harm or potentially even kill the target.

  • Often discouraged unless absolutely necessary
