Chapter 5

You decide to invite Tom to Hogwarts, but you keep an eye on him.  He turns out to be a brilliant student and a charismatic figure, charming teachers and fellow students alike.  In his fifth year he becomes a Slytherin prefect.  That year, someone opens the Chamber of Secrets and a Muggle-born girl is killed by a monster that escaped from the chamber.  Riddle puts the blame on a third-year student, Rubeus Hagrid, and his pet acromantula Aragog.  Everyone except you believes Riddle's story; so Hagrid is expelled.

As you suspected, Riddle soon begins to take an obsessive interest in the Dark Arts, an interest he inspires in his many followers among the students in Slytherin House.  Soon he has acquired a new identity as Lord Voldemort, and his followers pride themselves in their new identity as Death Eaters.  You try to prevail upon him to change his ways, but he defies you to convince any of the other professors that he is anything but the brilliant, charming boy they think he is.

Grindelwald, knowing that Lord Voldemort has become your enemy and fearing for your safety, challenges him to a duel as soon as Voldemort comes of age.  Voldemort, believing that his fighting skills are superior to those of any wizard on Earth except you, accepts the challenge.  What Voldemort doesn't know is that Grindelwald has stolen the Elder Wand, which makes whoever has conquered its previous owner invincible.  Grindelwald kills Voldemort.  At Grindelwald's trial, you testify that he was trying to save you from Voldemort and that he had challenged Voldemort to a fair fight.  Your testimony persuades the Wizengamot to give Grindelwald a relatively light sentence: three years in Azkaban.  Upon being released, Grindelwald rejoins you and resumes his position as a Hogwarts professor.
