Chapter 37

After that battle at the Ministry, the Minister for Magic can no longer deny that Voldemort has returned.  Your reputation and Harry's are restored, and you can now concentrate on preparing to defeat Voldemort once and for all.

You discover that Voldemort has been creating Horcruxes - pieces of his soul - and hiding them in various objects, so that if his body is killed his spirit will survive until a new body can be created for him.  That is how he managed to return after his attempt to kill Harry as a baby backfired on him.  You find one of the Horcruxes and destroy it with your sword, but Voldemort has placed magical protections on his Horcruxes, and since you are no longer as quick as you used to be, the one on the Horcrux you destroyed costs you the use of one hand.  The rest of the Horcruxes will have to be found and destroyed by a younger person than yourself - Harry Potter.

During Harry's sixth year at Hogwarts, you tell him what he must do before taking on Voldemort and, with the help of some memories that you previously put into your Pensieve, you take him on a guided tour of Voldemort's life.  Meanwhile, you survive two attempts on your own life by Draco Malfoy, who has just joined the Death Eaters to get revenge for the capture of his father.  Once Harry has been fully instructed, you decide to take him to a place where you think Voldemort has hidden one of his Horcruxes.  But since you realize that you may not return, or may return in an incapacitated state, before you go you call Snape into your office to leave him instructions: he must at all costs make Voldemort think he is still a Death Eater while surreptitiously sabotaging whatever he can.

Snape then informs you that Narcissa Malfoy persuaded him to make an Unbreakable Vow to protect her son Draco, and since Voldemort threatened to kill Draco unless Draco kills you, Snape promised to kill you if Draco fails.  An Unbreakable Vow is enforced by Dark Magic; anyone breaking such a vow is immediately killed.

If you choose to instruct Snape to kill you, turn to Chapter 42.

If you choose to instruct Snape not to kill you, turn to Chapter 40.
