Chapter 23
Harry's courage inspires you to tell him about the prophecy, even the part of it that says he must either kill Voldemort or die trying. Harry is eager to wreak revenge upon Voldemort for having killed his parents, and you have to caution him that he must wait until he has become strong enough to defeat such a formidable enemy.
In his second year at Hogwarts, Harry once again shows his mettle. Lucius Malfoy slips Voldemort's diary to Ron's younger sister Ginny, a new first-year student who is also sorted into Gryffindor. The diary possesses Ginny and forces her to open the Chamber of Secrets for the first time in fifty years, releasing the monster within: not the acromantula Aragog, as Tom Riddle had claimed, but an enormous snake called a Basilisk, who tries to kill Muggle-born students. Through a series of lucky accidents, the Basilisk's victims are petrified instead of killed and are eventually cured in the Hospital Wing, but Ginny is forced to enter the Chamber, where Voldemort's memory, in the form of a sixteen-year-old Tom Riddle, is gradually sucking the life out of her. With Ron's help, Harry enters the chamber, kills the Basilisk and destroys the diary, thus saving Ginny's life, thwarting Voldemort's and Lucius' plan to unleash the young Riddle, and saving Hogwarts from closure.
