Chapter 4

Ministress Hermione Jean Granger-Weasley. The man in the photo was Ron Weasely, and the children were...Rose and Hugo, I believe? I think Rose is in my year, according to Maria.

"Ah, so there's my favorite young felon!" Ministress Weasley says finally, putting down her quill and smiling like nothing is wrong. "You've broke quite a few rules, young lady"

Rosalie stared down at her feet: her black shoes are scuffed. Ruby would kill me.

Ruby. This morning felt like a lifetime ago. This morning? Yesterday? Last year

"Do you know who I am?" Ministress Weasley, really quiet and gentle as she leans forward, and rests on the desk with her elbows. She doesn't mean it in an intimidating way: just a simple question.

Rosalie nodded very slowly. "M-Maria t-told me about y-you"

"Ah, yes, Maria Mavers. I've heard about her untimely death. Let me be the first to offer my deepest condolences. I myself lost my best friend less than a year ago, and I know how it feels"

Ministress Weasley's eyes glassed over: Rosalie knew who she's talking about. Luna Lovegood, another member of the original Dumbledore's Army, passed. Maria had cried when she told Rosalie.

Oh no. What if-what if they erased her memory? Would Rosalie not even remember Maria? Or that wacko explosion? Or Hogwarts and the Wizarding World? Rosalie was a witch, she knew it! She'd been waiting, patiently, her entire life! Maria dead, and now this? Was her entire world crumbling around her?

An agonizing couple of seconds pass, until she finally blurted out:

"Can I still go to Hogwarts?"

Ministress Weasley chuckles. "Well, that's complicated, Miss Rox"

"You know my name?" Rosalie asked, confused and flattered.

The Ministress chuckled again, and leaned back. "By now all of Britain knows your name. The Daily Prophet had some things to say about you."

      "I still don't understand what's going on-or, what happened."

"All questions will be answered in time. Macaron?" Ministress Weasley offered, holding out a small, cream-white pastrie to Rosalie. Confused, she took the macaron, and began to nibble on it.

"Alright, so" The Ministress clapped some papers onto the desk. "You are in the office of the Ministress of Magic. You are here on charge of several violations, including the International Statute of Secrecy,  Underage Magic, and Endangerment to Muggles. You will be on trial for these violations, and we will let the Wizengamot decide what to do with you. In the meantime, however, you are to stay with your sister in the home of Xenophilius Lovegood. He volunteered to take you, as he is the father of the late and great Luna Lovegood-"

      "I'm sorry to interrupt, Ministress"-

      "Please, call me Hermione"

"Okay...Hermione. What do you mean my sister? Ruby? Is she okay?"

"All will be explained in time, Miss Rox. I will let the guilt fall off your shoulders: Maria was the only one who died in the...problem. Many Muggles were injured, and some were insane. It cost the Ministry thousands of pounds to repair the school and change everyone's memories"

"Now, we don't know a lot about what happened. We know you and your friend were hiding behind a Muggle school, surrounded by unassuming, innocent Muggles, practicing magic. Your friend taught you all about the Wizarding World, correct?"

Rosalie nodded, feeling a bit guilty. It didn't matter. Maria was dead.

Dead. She still couldn't believe it. Maria, her best friend, her savior of her drab life...dead. Because of her. Rosalie. Maria, with her kind parents who didn't know about our lessons, and little sister. Dead. It didn't make sense. Rosalie felt like, any minute now, Maria would jump out of the shadows and say that she pranked her. Rosalie knew it was a prank. It had to be. Some giant, awful hoax. This time tomorrow Rosalie would be walking home with Maria, alive and happy, laughing about how hard she fell for this prank.

"So you must know this was a...frankly stupid idea, correct?" Rosalie nodded sadly. "I see. That was...something we've never seen before. Perhaps it was because of an improper use of a wand, or underage witches. But what you made...that explosion...was not like anything we've ever seen before. Out of Lumos the simplest spell...with that amount of power you could save or take over the world, Rosalie."

Rosalie looked down at her hands. Her emotions were swarming: fear, guilt, confusion, fear. Lots and lots of fear. It felt like her heart had been wrung out, and was tumbling through a tornado. Rosalie couldn't help the small tear running down her cheek, and quickly wiped it away. Not until, though, the Ministress saw it. Ministre-Hermione looked at her sadly, and took her hand.

"I know it's hard and confusing right now. But you have to remember you're a strong girl. And I see some of myself in you. A scared little Muggle-born girl too powerful and smart for her own good. And here I am. Miss Rox, let me also remind you that I will be on your side for the trial. I'm sure that we'll figure something out, and we can't exactly let you go with just a warning, but I'm sure you'll be going home anytime soon"

Rosalie nodded slowly, unable to say something, and the tears started to slide down her cheeks.
