Chapter 2: His Majesty Unknown

Chapter 2

"What are we even looking for?" Mort moaned, "We have no clue what even happened!" The three teenagers have been by the dungeon for hours, looking for something that points to what happened, "We don't even know which cell your brother was in!" The two girls moaned. Mort has been complaining for almost the whole time, and they were getting sick of it.

"That why we're here, Mort, to find where he was." Devan explained, again, "we've been over this." Suddenly a new shadow entered.

"What are you doing here?" the person questioned, "You're supposed to be in your room." Devan stood up from where she was crouching. She walked over to the guard,

"We have permission from the Head Mistresses." Devan lied. The guard looked carefully at her,

"Why would she give you," he emphasized, " permission to search a crime scene?" he leaned closer to Devan's face, "that's pretty far fetched," Devan smirked,

"Not if I'm Jaspers's twin sister." The guard's face retreated in shock. He stood up straight.

"He has a sister?" the guard asked, "And it's you?" Devan nodded; the guard turned around in haste, "Keep searching." Mort came up behind Devan and scared her.

"Why was he so scared of you?" he asked; Devan shrugged,

"I know why," Jenna declared, "You said you're his twin sister, right?" Devan nodded again, "Then he must think that you are also as powerful as him since you are twins." Devan and Mort both gasped, "Make sense, right?" She chuckled, "Thought so." The three kept searching the dungeon for any other clues. Mort called Devan over to him,

"Is it just me, or is it strange that Jenna knew that?" He asked tensely. Devan shook her head,

"She's just brilliant." Mort looked back at where Jenna was searching.

"It's just...." he started, "She seems mysterious." Devan shrugged,

"That's Jenna's personality. When I walked into my room, her bed was filled with books, and the ground was filled with sticks." Devan giggled, "I was so confused." Mort laughed with her. Jenna looked over to them,

"You guys, alright?" she asked; Devan gave her a thumbs up and turned back to Mort,

"See, she's fine. Let's keep searching." Mort walked over to a cell they haven't checked yet while Devan headed over to the far wall. Mort looked over to Devan as she searched her area. Jenna caught him staring, so he quickly turned back around. As the prince examined the walls in the cell, his fingers traced into something. Probably just a crack, he thought. Suddenly Mort felt a hand being placed onto his shoulder. He flipped around. Jenna and Devan were both standing behind the boy.

"You okay?" Devan asked, "You zoned out for a second." He nodded. Jenna snorted and rolled her eyes.

"I couldn't find anything, sorry, Devan," Mort said apologetically; she sighed.

"Whoever took him must be really smart." Jenna dispiritedly, Devan chuckled. Then, Devan leads the other two royals out of the dungeon to find all of the kids back in the hallways.

"That was fast," Mort whispered to his friends, "I thought we were going to have dinner in our dorms."

"Same," Jena whispers from behind, making Mort jump, "you know, for a prince, you really jumpy," Devan nudged Jenna, "It's true!"

"Let's just get back to our classes if they are still happening." Devan sighed; the three walked to their separate classes, looking around at each student,

It's like nothing happened! Devan thought. All of the other royals looked dazed as if they had all just forgot what had happened! Devan saw a girl with blonde hair and a pink dress a few ways away,

"Mallory! Mallory!" Devan ran up to her, accidentally shoving some people along the way. Mallory turned around and looked at Devan, and smiled.

"Devan! I've been looking for you!" She exclaimed, "Where's Jenna?" Devan told her that Jenna and their new friend, Mortimus.

"Ooo! Is he cute? Handsome? Princely? Oh My Ella, do you like him!?!" Mallory exclaimed. Devan and Jenna groaned,

"NO! Why would I?" she asked her pink-obsessed friend as Mallory led her to their first class, "I have no interest in something like that." Mallory smirked, "What? I don't! Just because I'm a princess, whose father doesn't even remember her name, by the way, it does not mean I like boys," Mallory stopped in her tracks, looking at Devan's eyes,

"Wait... you like GIRLS!" Devan groaned, again, this time very loudly,

"No! I just don't like anyone, in love form, that is." Mallory caught up with her,

"So, you don't like boys or girls..... What is the point of life!" She gawked, "I mean, all I ever do is look nice for a prince! And you don't even care about loving someone! I mean ah- yo- wh-" she stuttered over her words, Devan chuckled,

"You're such a drama queen." the two girls entered their class to find only boys,

"what the..." Devan wondered aloud, "Where are all the girls?" Mallory looked behind her shoulder,

"Right there." Devan turned around to see a girl with even blonder hair, pinker clothes and more makeup than Mallory,

"Emma of Wilderwood, the most preppy, pink girl in the school. She has a tremendous amount of makeup on, and that's coming from me." Almost 10 girls trailed behind her, "and that is all of the other girls in this class." Devan slowly turned back around and scanned the room while she sat down in her seat. She saw at least 14 blonde royals in the room. Boys, girls, all looking the same, all except one boy in the back row. He was the only person in the room with a unique look. Devan looked at the clock seeing she had 5 minutes until class was supposed to start. The princesses walked over to the boy, who kept his head looking at his drawing,

"What do you want?" he asked coldly, "aren't you supposed to be getting ready for class?" The boy looked up at her, he had a British accent that wasn't super strong, but it wasn't soft. His ash-black hair complemented his fair skin. He lifted his eyes to hers as she saw the colour of his eyes,

"Wait.. your eyes are-" Devan was lost with words. This boy didn't even have to try and look like a prince. He just is.

"Weird?" he retorted, "Wacko? Different? Creepy? I'm sure you think that like everyone else. And don't get me started on my- whatever." he looked away from the princess, "You probably think I'm a freak just like every other person in this mock of a school." Devan was about to object when the teacher came in. She was tall, skinny, and blonde, just like almost every other girl in the school.

"Hello, princes and princesses!" she smiled. The students greeted her with a hello, but Devan couldn't stop thinking about the boy in the back. His freckles were amazing, not too much but not too little, his hair was gorgeous ash, and his eyes... where did she even start? Devan turned around, looking at him, making eye contact; he held it for a second before he looked away.

"I am Miss Rose, your beauty teacher!" all of the girls, except Devan, cheered. "This year, we have a new student! Devan, would you please come up and tell us something about your old life? It's not every day you get someone from the readers' realm in our prestigious school!" Devan slowly stood up, suddenly uncomfortable, and walked to the front.

Just like kindergarten, Devan had thought. Devan introduced herself, explaining where she's from, about her old family, and lastly, about her lost twin brother. After she had told what had happened the night before, everyone gave her a confused look.

"Um, Devan, sweety, we don't have a dungeon in our school." Miss Rose explained to her, "And you're the only new student at this school." Devan looked at her confused,

"That's not possible, I have a twin brother named Jasper, and he was taken in the middle of the night...." She looked around the class, the other students eyeballing her with confusion. The lost princess was also confused out of her mind. Devan didn't want to start her first class off horribly, so she quickly made something up.

"That is a joke we have in the readers' realm," she said slowly. She fake laughed and went back to her seat. Miss Rose laughed with her,

"Well, you'll have to teach us some of your readers' knowledge, Devan." Devan plastered a fake smile and nodded,

"Anyway, this sameator we will be doing," Devan raised her hand"- ah, yes?"

What is a sameator?" Miss Rose laughed again,

"It is our school terms, dearie," Devan nodded. Then, as Miss Rose explained their assignment, she doodled on a sheet of paper for what felt like hours.

"Devan? Devan. DEVAN!?!" Her teacher yelled, "Please, pay attention. Who would you like as your partner in the pairs fashion show." she asked sweetly. Without hesitation, Devan pointed to the boy in the back. Shocked, her teacher nodded and kept calling out names. Finally, Devan turned around and saw the boy giving her a death glare.

Once Miss Rose gave everyone a partner, she made everyone sit with the person they were put with. Devan moved to the back to sit with the boy.

"Okay, everyone, get to know your partner! you have 10 minutes to introduce yourselves." Miss Rose explained. Devan walked over to her new partner. They sat in silence for a few minutes until he spoke up,

"Why did you choose me?" he growled, "you could've chosen anyone." Devan looked at him in wonder. This prince thought so ill of himself.

"I'll tell you why I choose you if you tell me your name," The prince looked at her with his violet eyes. She could see hues of blue and silver in them, like stars. He kept his face in a frown, jawline clenched, staring into her eyes. Devan quickly looked away, scared he would see her soul.

This boy..... she thought, he makes me scared, yet. Curious, it's weird

He sighed in defeat,

"Nope," he insisted, "I don't even think the teachers know my name, so I just don't tell anyone." Devan looked at him with confusion,

"Why don't you want people to know your name?" she wondered aloud. He stared out the window. Once he didn't answer, Devan figured it was a touchy subject,

"Anyways," she stated, "So, the reason I chose you was that I wanted to prove to you that I don't think you weird." she looked at him in the eye, "I think your hair and eyes are really cool." she saw him blush in the window reflection. Devan blushed in response.

"Haha, sure you do...." he paused, unsure if he should trust her. Devan looked at him confidently,

"Did I not just tell you why and complement you? His majesty unknown." she teased with an exaggerated bow,

"I guess, but the thing is-" he was cut off by the teacher, Devan groaned.

"I hope that was enough time," Miss Rose said happily, "Please move back to your original seats." Devan stood up and went back to her seat. She turned around and looked at the boy, who shrugged and smiled.

Next time, she told herself. She was going to find out what his name was soon, just he wait.

Miss Rose explained to the girls that your smile was one of the most essential things in seducing a prince. So while the teacher helped some girls make their smiles 'perfect,' the boys got to fix their gelled-up hair.

"Devan?" Miss Rose tapped her shoulder, looking at her with a smile,

"Yes?" Devan asked, looking away from the boys. Miss Rose looked Devan in the eye before asking the princess to show her a smile. Devan broke eye contact,

"You want me to smile for no reason?" She asked, looking back up at her. Miss Rose nodded,

"Yes, that is what I am helping you with during this class, your smile," Miss Rose said slowly, "now, smile," she said, waiting. Devan looked around the room. All the girls were peeking in mirrors while the boys were still- somehow- doing their hair. Everyone seemed busy except her partner, the no-named prince. The princess looked back at her teacher, confused,

"But why would I need to smile? Why can't I smirk, or frown or do nothing with my face?" She challenged, "Why would I need this skill?" The whole class looked at her, including the teacher, shocked that Devan talked back to Miss Rose.

"Well, Princess Woods, say you were crowned queen. Do you think you should smirk at the crowd? Or frown? Or do nothing with your face?" In return, she asked, not assuming to respond from Devan and walked back to her desk.

"Why would she want to be a queen if all they expect from them is to smile?!" The prince retorted, "why do we all have to pamper ourselves to make the public eye like us? Shouldn't they know their leaders for who they are? Not just their smile?" Devan was shocked, he didn't seem like the speaking up type, but the class all rolled their eyes as if this was normal, which Devan soon found was.

"Prince T-" Miss Rose stopped, covering her mouth, "Your majesty," she corrected, " This is your first warning for both of you." The teacher looked over at Devan. Then, with a glare, she warned, "choose your next words carefully." Devan looked over at the prince, and as if he knew exactly what she was going to say, he slowly stood up, saying, "Why not a smirk?"
