Chapter 1: The Rabbit Hole
Chapter 1
It all started with a pop quiz, a stupid, stupid-
"Pop quiz!" Devan's substitute teacher, Miss. Maylore said. Devan was learning about black slavery for the seventh year in a row now. While the teacher hands out the papers, she steals a look at her twin brother, Jasper, he may be her twin, but they are nothing alike. He loves the facts, being correct the whole time and football, while Devan loves fantasy books and make-believe stories. She also steals a peek at her best friend, Jessica.
They have been best friends since they were both ensembles in their school play and became stand-by cheerleaders. Ever since they had to be the front and the cow's backside in Oklahoma, they've been inseparable. Once Miss. Maylore had handed everyone the test we began.
"First question, when did the slavery stop? 1836" Devan mumbled under her breath; all of the questions were just reciting dates, places and people, and then writing it down on paper. Like always, Devan finished her test first, since she had been an honour-roll student for 4 years and counting, and handed it to Miss. Maylore. Once she sat back down again, she saw Jessica's face light up, literally light up like a light. Then, like a chain reaction, slowly, all of the other student's faces lit up, all except Jasper and Miss. Maylore. Jasper's response was the same as his twins, look up, look around, scream.
"WHAT THE HECK IS HAPPENING!" he screamed.
"I HAVE NO CLUE," Devan screamed back at him while Miss. Maylore looked as if she did this every day.
"Don't fret, children, you are safe" she had a wide grin on her face; her 40-year-old face and black hair looked like a witch. Then, she lunged out and Devan and grabbed her arms.
"Now, if you tell me where it is, I won't have to hurt you," Miss. Maylore said.
"Where what is?" Devan asked while Cam was trying to wake up the other students.
"Oh, don't you play stupid with me, girl," suddenly Miss. Maylore's nose got big, and her skin was filled with warts. Her black hair was under a large black hat that matched her neBlackck and purple dress that just appeared.
"How did yo-" Jasper was cut off by our substitute teacher, or whatever she was, choking him on hand, shooting up onto his neck.
"STOP!" Devan screamed, "You're hurting him!" Devan grabbed Miss. Maylore's arm and pulled until she dropped Jasper. Devan ran over to her, barely breathing, brother.
"Water," Jasper crooked. His sister rushed over to the class sink while the witch ran after me, turned on the water, and sprayed the liquid at her. Surprisingly she disappeared into thin air. Devan ran over to her twin with a cup of water.
"Thank you," he said after a big gulp of the cold liquid, "why did you throw the water at Miss. Maylore?" he asked.
Devan looked confused, "I thought you said to throw water at her like in the wizard of Oz." She helped him up onto his feet, "didn't you?"
"I just wanted water; how would that work?" Jasper asked, "The wizard of oz isn't real, so that wouldn't work."
"What if….." Devan led on with a smile on her face
"Nope, nope, nopety nope no," Her brother said, "It's not possible!"
"It's the only explanation," Devan pointed out. "If she wasn't magical, how could she have disappeared? Huh?"
"Let's just get our friends up first. It's creepy when they're looking at us like that" he turned around to the other students to see they were all working on their tests. "What," He said, "It's like the-."
"They didn't even know what happened," Devan finished. The twins looked at each other and sat back down in their seats.
"Would Devan and Jasper Woods please come to the office. Thank you." A voice said over the P.A. The twins Got up out of their seats, looking at each other, and went down to the office.
"Do you think it's about what just happened?" Devan's brother whispered.
"No clue," She said. Once they were at the office, the door closed behind them. They looked for the person who called them there, but they couldn't find anyone.
"Are you two the Woods twins?" They heard a voice say, "if so, please step forward" Devan and Jasper looked apprehensively at each other as they did as they were told. Suddenly they dropped into the floor, into a long, dark shaft.
"AHHHHHH," the twins screamed.
"What is going on!" Jasper shouted at his sister.
"I have no clue!" She said as the siblings plummeted down into a dark, damp, and dusty room. They each landed in a chair in an office. Devan and Jasperam just sat there, terrified in the face, waiting for someone or something to come.
"Hello!" a cheery voice said, "Are you two the Woods twins?" the voice asked.
"Yes," Jasper said slowly, his sister not being able to speak. Then, finally, finally, the person came into the light by their chair. She was probably 30 years old, with brown hair and a tight blue dress.
"You two have grown up so much," she sighed.
"You know us?" Devan asked, lips coming apart for the first time sitting there.
"Of course I do, sweety, have your parents told you yet?" She asked kindly, "They were supposed to be on your 16 birthday," she mumbled under her breath as she sat down.
"It's our birthday in a week," Jasper explained, "What were they going t-"
"Tell us," Devan interrupted, Jasper looked at her, his twin sister just shrugged.
"First, tell us where we are," Jasper said, "Then you tell us your name and your relation with our parents."
Devan sighed, "Sorry about him. He always wants the facts."
"Oh, no worries," the lady said, "well you are at S.R. Academy of cou-"
"What does the S.R. stand for," Jasper asked suspiciously. The lady stood up and looked out the window. "I can't tell you that, you must figure that out by yourselves while you're staying here."
"Staying here!" we both scream.
"May I continue?" she asked sternly, the twins nodded. "My name is Miss. Fairy, and how do I know your parents, well dearies, I made their dreams come true," she said with a smile.
"What? Dreams come true? My mom is sick right now. How is that a dream come true" Jasper said, gritting through his teeth.
"Queen Ella is not sick, what are y- Oh" Miss. Fairy's eyes grew huge. "You don't know yet?" she asked.
"Know what?" Devan asked. "Queen Ella?"
"Would you like to have some tea?" She asked nervously
"Sure," Devan replied, reaching out for the tea and cookies, handing one to her brother.
"So, I know it must be weird hearing this from me," she started, "but you two aren't related to who you think are your parents."
"So what you are saying is that we," Jasper points to him and his sister, "are adopted."
"Yes, and your real parents should be here any minute, so I would like you two to get dressed. I will have some things sent up to your new rooms" she stands up and goes for the door.
"Wait!" Jasper stops her and looks at Devan. "What if we don't want to go to school here," he asks.
"Well, then we have to turn you two into animals," Miss. Fairy leaves the room.
"So it's either animals or school," Devan remarks. "I choose school," she gives Jasper her hand, "And I am not allowing my brother to become a squirrel," they laugh. Miss Fairy peeks her head inside.
"Are you two coming?" She asks; the twins scramble up out of the chairs and follow her out. Miss. Fairy leads them down a hall and up 5 staircases. The kids gasp for air as they finish the last set of stairs.
"Do we," Devan gasps for air, "have to do that every time?"
"No, just until you have been to a ball." Miss. Fairy replies
"Ball," Jasper asks, "Like dancing and suites?"
"Dresses and makeup?" Devan follows up
"Yup," the twins groan. She leads them to two doors, "Devan, this is your room, you will be rooming with 2 other girls, and your lady in waiting will come soon. Jasper, this is your room. You are rooming with 2 other boys as well; your steward will be up shortly. You both have clothing in your rooms. Please be down in 2 hours. I hope that is enough time. Good luck," Miss. Fairy leaves to twins to themselves.
"Ready?" Devan asks excitedly, Jasper sighs.
"I guess so," and with that, they walk into their rooms.
As Devan walks into her new room and looks for light.
"Hello?" She asks, "Roommates?" all of a sudden, someone comes up behind her
"Who are you," the voice asks.
"I'm Devan, I just got here" the lights turn on, and she turns around to see two girls, about the same age, staring at her. "Hi! I'm your new roommate, I suppose" Devan looks around for a bed and spots one that wasn't taken and plops onto it. She looks around at the decor, one pink bed, one black, and the yellow one she has. By the pink bed, there were lots of pink and purple things and tiaras everywhere. On the black one, there were books, lots and lots of books. On the floor, there were weird sticks.
Pink for a princess, and black for mysterious. Stereotypical.
"Devan, you said?" The one girl had asked, "I'm Mallory," she handed Devan a bracelet. "These are our room bracelets; you will need them to show what group you are in," she held up her wrist. Then, she grabbed the other girl's wrist. "They're mandatory, but cute," Pink bed Devan thought.
"I'm Jenna," the other girl said, "Sorry about Miss. Princess here, she loves fashion" Jenna rolled her eyes" I'm guessing you like fashion too, perfect," she groaned,
"Actually, no, not really. I always need someone to pick something nice for me, or else I would be wearing sweatpants to a wedding," the girls laugh.
"Okay, I need to get ready, though; I meeting my parents for the first time in like 1:45 minutes" Mallory's eyes went huge.
"1 hour and 45 min-" she gasped "you need to get ready! I'll help" she dragged Devan into a pink chair before she could complain. Mallory quickly did her hair in an intricate half up and half down hairstyle and put on gold makeup that matched the unfashionable girl's blonde streaks. "Where are your dresses?" she asked after an hour of doing Devan's face and hair.
"Miss. Fairy said that she put some in here for me" Devan looked over at Jenna. Her face was in shock.
"You talked to the Headmistress?" Jenna asked, "How?" Devan explained that she and her twin brother were kidnapped and taken here, and she also told them the parents' thing.
"Wow," the two girls gasped. "That's crazy" Mallory stood up to find the dresses in the closet. "Here they are!" she said happily. The fashionista pulled out an elegant white and rose gold dress. She smiled. "Perfect" The new roommates helped Devan into her dress. They directed her to the mirror.
"Wow," Devan gasped. "Who is that?" she was so shocked that she could look so pretty.
"I know, I know, I'm a miracle worker. Now, let's go meet your parents!" Mallory squealed!
Devan woke up shaking; she opened her eyes to bright white light.
"Finally! Thank goodness you're awake," she heard a voice say, "not the best way, but you're up" Devan slowly sat up, leaning against the wall,
"What happened?" she wondered out loud. She looked around the room she was in, "Where is my brother?". Devan's roommates looked nervously at each other.
"Devan, before you get angry, just know that it's what's best for everyone's safety," Mallory said carefully. She looked at Jenna helplessly.
She huffed, "your brother is in the dungeon" Devan looked at her newly be founded friends.
"What!" she screamed, "Why?"
"Miss. Fairy thinks it was him who made everybody faint," Jenna explained,
"If he did that, he must be really-" Mallory sighed dreamily, "good looking" Devan and Jenna did the gag sign,
"No, Mal, why, Ewww," Devan muttered. Jenna helped her up out of her bed, "I need to get him out. Now" as Devan checked the mirror to see how messed she looked, Jenna spoke up,
"I'm coming," she announced, "This is the only cool thing that happens here, and I'm not missing out on that, plus, roommates have to have each other's backs, right?" Devan smiled as she went to get dressed in pants and a t-shirt. Once Jenna and Devan were dressed for planning, a.k.a. Comfy clothes began to plan.
"Okay, tomorrow is our first class of this year, correct?" Devan asked Jenna. Elizabeth stopped doing her makeup,
"Guys, this isn't right. You can get in a lot of trouble and maybe even get expelled!" she argued.
"I'm not letting my brother stay in a dungeon, would you allow your family to be kept in captivity!" Devan shouted, "Because I'm not going to allow that to happen to my twin brother." Mallory and Jenna were both shocked when Devan had just been a sweet and caring girl, but this was a whole different side of her. She took in 3 deep breaths and calmed down, "As I was saying, tomorrow is the first day of school, so all of the teachers will be busy helping the new students, so it's the perfect time to strike!" As Jenna and Devan planned, Mallory did her makeup, hair, and skincare for the first day.
"Okay, so, we have to go during what period?" Jenna asked, "My parents would kill me if I skip class on the first day, and do you know how hard it is to live without my music?" Devan thought over again. At first, she planned to go during dance class, but now Jenna couldn't skip.
"Let's go at the club hour. We could say we have our own. That gives us an hour; that's enough time for us to use, right?" She looked over at Jenna, who nodded, "Then we can slip downstairs to the dungeon, find the key and get him out." Devan grabbed a lipstick from one of the mirrors and placed it on the table; she also retrieved 2 lip glosses and a blender sponge. "The blender will represent a guard, the lip glosses us and the lipstick, my brother. The guards will be guarding the cell by the front, and the window is too small to climb and escape, or else it wouldn't be much of a dungeon" Jenna saw the direction where Devan was going,
"So that means we need a distraction," she followed "someone unsuspicious" The two girls looked at their other roommate, she looked back at them with a nervously,
"Oh no, no no no no no nono," shaking her head vigorously, "I already said no, besides, I have to help plan the ball." Devan and Jenna plead desperately,
"Please, Mal! I won't be able to stay here without my twin brother, and if I try and leave, I will become an animal and probably die!" Devan cried. She took her hands, "If we get caught, I'll make sure you don't get in any trouble. I promise," Devan put her hand out, "Just please, help me get my brother back" Mallory saw much this means to Devan, tears leaking down her friend's face. She let out a breath,
"I'll help you, but only if you let me dress you up for the ball," she agreed with a smirk; she took Devan's hand and shook it. Then, as the girls planned, Elizabeth planned the clothes and dresses.
"Rrrrrrring," the bell for lunch rang, Jenna and Devan put on their fancy dress for food, and the three girls scurried downstairs. Once they were downstairs, Devan scanned the room and found a table with only one boy. She dragged Jenna over as Mallory sat down with the other pink-obsessed princesses.
"Hey, mind if we sit here?" Devan asked, and the prince nodded; the two girls slid into the seats and introduced themselves. The prince was very handsome. He had bright white-blonde hair, very fair, almost white, skin, and the greenest eyes Devan had ever seen,
"I'm Mo- uh Prince Mortimerious of Chessington the first, but you can call me Mort," he said with a shy smile, "It's nice to meet you," he bowed. The girls froze and started belly laughing. "Ummm," he bit his lip in embarrassment. Then, through gulps of laughter, Devan corrected.
"Oh, sorry! We aren't laughing at you" she took a deep breath and calmed down, "We," she pointed to her giggling friend, "just were laughing at the introduction. We both don't understand why we do that," she elbowed Jenna to stop laughing. "Sorry if that was rude, Mort" The prince let out the breath.
"I don't like it either, it makes us look and sound more important, but if we didn't have everyone else, there wouldn't be a kingdom for us to look after." Devan was shocked; all of the royals she has met, including Jenna, are very wrapped up in the little world they rule.
"That's a brilliant perspective," Jenna said once she noticed that her friend was too busy staring at their new friend. Jenna elbowed Devan before Mort saw.
"Hey Mort, what's your middle name?" Jenna asked, "Don't we have to say our full name?" Mort blushed,
"I don't know it. Neither do my parents." Jenna looked at the prince with a confused expression.
"Didn't they name you?" Devan asked as Jenna studied him.
"Is that the only reason you guys came to sit with me?" He grumbled. The girls looked shocked.
"What, no!" Devan quickly said, "Jenna here was just curious. Our other roommate ditched us, and we saw you alone." Mortimer let out a breath.
"Okay, do you really want to know?" He asked Jenna; she nodded her head vigorously, "Thought so, Um," he bit his lip, "So, my parents didn't actually name me. That's all I'm saying for now." Jenna huffed in disappointment. The three kept on chatting and eating.
Once they finished, Miss. Fairy made an announcement that shocked everyone.
"Prodigies of the fine school, we have encountered a problematic situation. Please go back to your rooms until furthers notice. Food will be brought to your rooms if this situation becomes a further problem. Thank You," The Headmistress left the room, and the other students filed out of the cafeteria. Devan looked at Jenna as they thought the same thing. Jasper. The two girls scrambled out of their seats in haste while Mort studied them in confusion,
"You guys okay?" he asked suspiciously, "You seem extremely worried."
The girls look at each other; suddenly, a voice says something in Devan's head.
Jenna grabbed her napkin and scribbled something onto it. Are we gonna tell him? If we do, how? Devan nodded, remembering Mortimer was watching them.
"Mort, we have to tell you something." Devan started; she looked over to her friend for assistance, "But we have to do it somewhere else." The three royals rushed out of the cafeteria and ran into an empty room.
"What!" Mort shrieked once the two girls explained what happened with Devan's twin. Finally, the three friends had to sneak into one of the classrooms to tell their new friend, Mortimer, in peace. "Your brother, twin brother, I might say, almost killed- what?!?" The girls sighed.
"I was on my way to meet my real parents when we saw in one of the magic mirrors showing us the cafeteria, and it showed my brother's eyes glowing red! So we ran over there and tried to stop him, but he knocked both out, and I woke up in my room." Devan explained. She looked over to Jenna, "and now we think he escaped." Mort seemed so confused.
"You wanted him to stay in there? Why?"
"Oh, no! No, we were tryna get him out, but we were too late." Jenna sighed, "I was so excited." Devan's face was very unimpressed with Jenna. Suddenly there was a knock at the door, Miss. Fairy.
"I know you're in there, Devan," Devan moaned under her breath as she went to the door.
"I know we weren't supposed to come in here, but I couldn't go to my-" Miss. Fairy shushed the girl,
"First of all, I will let this slide one time. Second, as you might have guessed, your brother is gone." Devan's eyes widened,
"How," she asked, "how did my brother escape." a voice came from behind the headmistress.
"We believe it was one of our worst enemies." Devan looked at the body that the voice belongs to; it looked like Jasper.
"Dad?" she breathed. The man opened his arms as she leapt into them,
"Dad! It's you!" she squeezed him as her two friends come closer to the door.
"I'm here, Kandy, I'm here," her father whispered into Devan's ear.
"What?" Devan came out of the hug, "did you say?" her father looked at her confused,
"I said- uh- De-Devan!." he looked at Miss. Fairy, who was shaking her head.
"No, you didn't." had her father really forgotten her name, "who's Kandy?" His eyes filled with confusion, he looked over the Miss. Fairy shook her head in disappointment.
"I'm sorry, Devan, there seems to be a mixup." She grabs Devan's 'Dad' "Your father hasn't been well.." and pulls him down the hall.
"Well. That was weird." Mort emphasized. "Why didn't he-" Jenna slammed her hand on his mouth. He grunted and licked her hand.
"Eww! Why would you do that?!?" she shrieked, "I may not like princesses and stuff, but I'm not that gross." Mort smirked. Jenna huffed as she rolled her eyes.
"As I was saying, Why would-" Jenna clapped his mouth again.
"Jenna, it's fine," Devan said kindly; Mort licked Jenna's hand again.
"Oh, come on!" She rushed to the classroom sink to wash her hands; Devan and Mort stifled a laugh.
"I don't know why Mort, I don't know why he couldn't remember my name," Devan admitted. "Maybe Ms. Fairy just wanted me to meet a man who is a dad, just it didn't happen to be - well, mine....." The sad girl hung her head. Jenna came up to her and stood in front of her.
"I don't ever, and I mean ever, but it looks like you need it; besides, Miss Fairy said he wasn't feeling well, now, don't cry, you are not Mallory" Devan looked at Jenna in confusion as she stepped closer to her. Jenna spread her arms open and hugged her.
"Your Dad, or whoever that was, is a jerk" Devan nodded as she started crying. Mort came in from behind and awkwardly hugged them as well. Once they finished their group hug, Devan wiped her eyes and said,
"Well, it's time I find my real family. What about you guys?" She put her hands on her hips and stood up straight.
"If you go, I go, you're the kind of person someone could trust right away, and that person is me," Jenna said; Mort smirked,
"Well, that was cheesy," He got an eye roll from both girls, "But since you guys are my first friends, I'll come. Plus, I've got my own mystery to solve." The girls nodded,
"Your middle name," It was Jenna's turn to smirk.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," he muttered, "But how do we start?"
"We..." Devan trailed off, looking around the room; Jenna read her mind and joined the search. Devan pulled out a map of the school, "Have to find the dungeon."
