Chapter Four: The Second Year
Chapter 4
Harry Potter's second year at Hogwarts started off in adventure, and rule-breaking, when Harry and his friend Ronald flew a bewitched car to school instead of riding the train. The boys claimed that they were unable to get on to platform 9 3/4 and panicked.
This drew unwelcome attention to one Arthur Weasley, Ronald's father, a ministry official. Mr. Weasley seems to have bewitched the car himself, though he may have aquired the vehicle post-enchantment. Whatever the truth may be, Harry Potter certainly had very odd friends.
Almost as soon as Harry had arrived at school, a reign of terror began. Students were found petrified, and threatening messages written in blood appeared in the corridors. These warned that the heir of Salazar Slytherin was going to 'purify' the school of muggle-borns.
Meanwhile, the school discovered something new about Harry. During a duel in the school's new duelling club, Harry's opponent conjured a snake. Harry, defenseless, spoke to the snake in Parsletongue. Though he only tried to ward off the snake, most people believed that a Parslemouth must be the mark of an evil wizard.
According to witness testimony, Harry took to hiding away in his dormitory with a strange old journal. He and his friend Weasley and girlfriend Hermione Granger were also seen near a girls' lavatory more than once. Reportedly, it was the same haunted by Hogwarts ghost 'Moaning' Myrtle.
This, combined with his unnatural abilities, gave Harry a very suspicious air. Muggleborns started going into hiding and avoiding him. Even teachers thought Harry could be dangerous.
That is, until his girlfriend, Hermione Granger, was petrified. Suddenly, at least half of the rumors about Harry had vanished. Unfortunately, his enemies used this as proof that no one really mattered to Harry Potter, not even his girlfriend.
On the day before school exams, Gilderoy Lockhart, a highly regarded wizard, writer, and Hogwarts professer at the time, single-handedly destroyed a Basilisk. The Basilisk was hidden under Hogwarts, and had been petrifying students with its mere gaze. Finally, all rumors about Harry had been debunked, and Harry was able to return to the warm embrace of the Dursleys, though it was painful to leave behind his girlfriend, Hermione.
