Chapter 5

“Can’t believe he just left!” I fumed quietly as I left the dance floor. I heard shuffling in the next hallway, so I turned invisible. It was the heads of school. I was so thankful at this moment for my powers.

“But vut eef we don’t find zem?” Nova was saying.

“We will, Nova!” Violet strutted quickly, but I could see she was angry.
“We will find them and crush them before they defeat us!” Victoria smiled sinisterly.

“Defeat us!” Nova laughed. “Imagine!”

“Hush, Nova!” Violet said sharply. “We’ll find out which ungrateful little brat is destined to defeat us! We just need more time to sense which student has abilities!”
“Or students.” Victoria added. I almost gasped out loud. They’re looking for a student with abilities that’s gonna defeat them?! I had abilities! Were they going to try and kill me? I quickly walked away as the three heads of school strutted away.

As they walked I heard Nova mention going back to their lab. Of course, the evil teachers had a lab. I should’ve known.

My mind was swirling so much I almost missed Liam sneaking around by a window. I stayed invisible so Liam wouldn’t direct me back to the dance. Liam opened the window and hopped out. I ran over to the window to see Liam had fallen fifteen feet into fluffy snow. Since the school is in Michigan, it snowed a lot. Until it was summer, when it was nice and warm, and when no students were allowed at the school.

I jumped after Liam, I know, totally reckless, but if Liam was escaping school, well, where was he gonna go? And what happened to his plan to ‘scare away the heads of school’? I followed Liam through the freezing air, wishing I had ‘self-heater’ powers instead of ice.

After following Liam through the winter storm for a while, we reached a large building that was grayish tan. Liam climbed a dead tree and hopped in a window. How did he know that window was unlocked?

I scrambled up the tree, breaking a branch loudly. Liam stuck his head out, but luckily still didn’t know I was there. I jumped in the window and found I was in a modern hallway, but I’d lost Liam. Between left and right, I chose right, since the left side was closer to the end of the building.

I ran invisibly down the hall and turned left and found myself in a large room. A loud clicking sound was coming from a weird tablet-looking thing with green buttons. Liam!

The sound of footsteps echoed around the room and Liam turned visible for a moment, looked up, then disappeared. Since he was invisible, I had no idea if he was even still in this room.
A woman in a lab coat and a tight brown bun walked in. I stayed still and held my breath, even though I was invisible too. She looked around with beady eyes behind rectangle glasses. She pulled a walkie-talkie out of her pocket and whispered into it.

“No one on floor two, room twenty-seven.” She said, still scanning the room. “Have the mistresses arrived?”

“Yes, they are in the lobby.” A man’s voice crackled through. “They had to leave the school when all the students were busy at the dance.” My eyes got wide. The mistresses as in the heads of school? The school as in Litica Prep School for Gifted Minors? Why would they be here?

The woman left, her boots going clack clack clack clack as she walked out of the room. Liam turned visible for a moment, turned and started walking to another room, turning invisible as he went.

I followed him, obviously. What was he up to?

Or, I tried to follow him. I might not even be going the right way. Eventually, we, or maybe just me because I might’ve lost Liam stopped in an even larger room. He turned visible. Yay!

The room was completely white, like the other room. There were computers on tables protruding from the wall.

There were screens on the walls with various different graphs and lines and data. It was a very modern secret evil lab.

Liam did more tapping and a large machine in the back lit up. I don’t know how I missed it. It was a big clear circular container of sorts with a white top and bottom. It had a keypad on the outside.

After Liam entered some more code into the computer, the computer said ‘ding!’ and a small silver key was produced from the end of it.

Liam took it and put the key in the keypad on the circular container. It said ‘bing!’. Then, the strangest thing happened.

Green lasers moved up and down in the container. They started to form into a shape. It was sort of in the shape of a gorilla, but with claws on its knuckles. And spikes on its back. And a very large, kind of sharp nose. With horns, obviously. It was kind of a green hologram of a monster. I hoped it would stay a hologram. Or just disappear.

Then it said ‘beeeeeep!’ and disappeared. Yay! (I think). Liam nodded, satisfied, and put the key in his pocket, and took a mini tablet thing off the white table. I heard the clicking of that lady’s boots and I was about to turn invisible, when I remembered I already was. Liam didn’t see to hear the boots.

Come on, Liam! I thought. Why wasn’t he turning invisible?! Moments before the woman entered, I turned visible while running to Liam. He saw me and looked like he wanted to say something, but he never got the chance, because I interrupted before he even said anything.

“Turn invisible!” I whispered. “Someone’s coming!” Liam did what I told him without question. I did the same. We stayed still in the middle of the room as the evil woman (I’m assuming she’s evil) stalked in. She looked around, with one eyebrow above her rectangle glasses.

“No one in the Producing Lab.” She said into her walkie-talkie. “It looks as it did a few minutes . . . one moment.” Tight-bun lady walked to the circular container the gorilla-monster had been made. She inspected it for a moment. She held her walkie-talkie closely to her violently violet lips.
“Someone’s activated Bintomn-2903.” She hissed. “We have intruders.”
