I entered the dining hall, and saw all the tables were set and looked very pretty. There were a few Christmas trees and the whole place looked pretty cool. We ate some chicken and rice for dinner, then went to a room I’d never been in before. It was twice the size of the dining hall, and the dining hall was really big. It was dark, except for some colored lights flashing and cruising the room. There were some balloons and snack tables. I squeezed in the doorway at the same time as all four hundred people and ended up standing in the exact middle. The heads of the school appeared on the platform in the front.
“You all look nice, thank you, I would hate to lock you in the dungeons if you had stray hairs.” Victoria smiled evilly. I quickly patted my head, just in case.
“Yes, so be good, because eef you are not, ve have punishment ready.” Nova said.
“Enjoy yourselves and be good, we need a break from you.” Violet said. They left. The music began and I kind of moved my head as I mindlessly wandered around. I eventually left and went to the empty bathroom. I decided this would be a good time to see if I could still use my powers. I concentrated, then looked down. I was invisible.
“Yes!” I said out loud. I still had my powers. I held up my hand and watched the sparks of electricity fly around my hand. And, could I still . . . ? I faced my hand towards the wall below the hand dryer and let a burst of ice shoot out. Yep, okay, I could still use magic. I heard people coming so I made sure I was visible and quickly turned on the hand dryer to melt the ice. I left as a few girls came in. I went back to the big room, and just stood, bored.
I spotted the boy who had talked to me in Mr. Reign’s class today. I followed him. He weaved through the crowds and I tried to keep up. He left the room and turned a corner. The beat of the music got fainter and fainter. The boy stopped, and I quickly turned invisible so he wouldn’t see me.
“Okay, okay, tonight is the night.” The boy said out loud. I almost thought he was talking to me, then remembered he couldn’t see me. “I’m really gonna do this. Man, this is gonna be cool, and maybe it’ll really scare those heads of school away!”
What the heck was he talking about? Scaring the heads of school away?
The boy sat down on the stone floor. “Liam, why aren’t you going?” He asked himself. I guessed his name was Liam. “Okay, now I’m ready.” He stood up, looked around, and turned invisible. I gasped loudly and turned visible, stumbled backwards, and fell. Liam turned visible, gasped, and stumbled back.
“Nat? What-how?”
“Liam? You can-you just-”
“You-you were there? You can-”
“How did-what?” I was so confused. I took a deep breath to stop my pounding heart, but I stayed on the ground because I was afraid I might fall again. “You turned invisible.”
“No, I didn’t-wait, but you turned invisible.” Liam said.
“Duh.” I didn’t even try to hide it, obviously, we had both turned invisible. “You-you have powers?”
“Well, no-not necessarily, I just-I don’t-” Liam stopped. He realized there was no denying it. “Yeah, I do, but I thought I was the only one.”
“I thought I was the only one too. Is turning invisible the only thing you can do?” I asked.
“No, I can do, like, electricity and ice.”
“Me too.” I was so weirded out. How did we both have the same powers? Liam reached out his hand. I took it and he helped me up. I brushed off my dress.
“So . . . that’s weird.” I said. I didn’t even know what to say, how to react. “No one knows I have powers. Have you told anyone?”
“My whole family knows, and says it's some ancient thing.” Suddenly, I smacked his arm.
“Ow!” He yelled.
“You can’t just walk around and-and turn invisible!” I exclaimed. “Someone is going to-!”
“Yeah, well, no one can find me if I’m invisible. If they find out I have powers, I’ll just escape. I’ve escaped four schools that said they were impossible to escape.” He said proudly.
“What were you doing?” I asked. “You were saying you were getting ready for something-”
“Damn it!” Liam looked angry with himself. “Why do I have to talk to myself!”
“You’re gonna ‘scare the heads of schools away’?” I asked.
“No.”
“What were you doing, then?”
“Nothing.”
“That is obviously a lie. We need to find out why we have the same powers, and how we got them-”
“An ancient thing.” Liam said, like it explained everything.
“What ancient thing?” I asked impatiently.
“Well, we can go see my grandpa about it. He’s like an expert-” Liam stopped. “No, we aren’t gonna-okay, it’s just an ancient thing, so let’s just leave it at that and go back to the dance, and have fun and stuff.”
“But-” Liam wrapped an arm around me, making me blush, (What was wrong with me?!) and walked us back to the big room. He brought me to the middle of the jumping crowd and told me to stay here while he got some punch. Apparently, it takes you more than twenty minutes to get some punch, because Liam did not return. I searched the room, wondering if he had a girlfriend or something he went back to. I didn’t see him at all, which left me with the conclusion that he left again.
