Chapter 3
Harry’s POV
Where is she? She wasn’t in the Great Hall when I left. Has she left already? Was I too late? Harrys mind sorted through all the possibilities of where she could be – “Harry?” she’d made him jump “oh there you are, I thought you’d gone without me or something? Where were you?” “Sorry Harry I had go get my purse” Luna was wearing her radish earrings and her butterbeer cork necklace, Harry could see she her spectrespecs glasses tucked in the waistband of her skirt, he smiled fondly as her dotty appearance.
“So, where do you want to go then?” Harry asked Luna as they set off. “Anywhere” she said “I just need some quills and maybe an ink bottle, and then we can go wherever” “sounds good, after we’ve got your quills do you think we could looks around the shops, its nearly Christmas and I haven’t even started buying presents yet. I haven’t got a clue what to get Ron or Hermione” Luna gasped “Oh I forgot about Christmas! I’ll have to get Ginny something, hmm” her voice drifted away dreamily in thought. Harrys stomach jolted at the sound of Ginny’s name, Harry smiled when he thought about her. They walked in silence for a while until they reached the outskirts of Hogsmead.
“So what do you think you’ll get Ginny?” Harry asked, failing as he did at breakfast to attempt to sound casual. “Oh I’m not sure, will you help me Harry? You’ve known Ginny for a long time, what are you getting her?” Harry was surprised that Luna thought he would be getting her anything, was it appropriate. What would Ron think, what would Ginny think? Hermione would just smile knowingly as she always does. “Sure, Luna, I wasn’t planning on getting her anything though, do you think that I should?” Harry asked, “Well you do like her? Don’t you?” Harry froze, they had reached the doorway of the stationary shop, Luna pushed the door open, it made a little jingle as she did so. “Come on Harry, its cold” she called “Sorry, and yeah I do like her y’know, she’s Ron’s sister…” his voice trailed off, Luna smiled at Harry and gestured him over to the quill section. “I thought Ronald hated that Dean was dating Ginny, surely he’d prefer his best friend?” Harry didn’t know why but he suddenly felt an urge to open up to Luna, with the Ginny thing at least. I trust Luna, Luna is honest and loyal, it’s not like I can talk to Ron is it? I mean it’s his sister! His sister. Surely, he wouldn’t like that, right? “I don’t think he would like his sister dating his best friend unfortunately Luna” he said, his voice heavy. “you’d be surprised Harry, Ronald would know that he could trust you” she picked out a few dark blue quills and a pot of deep blue ink to match and headed over to the till. Harry followed her and said “Even if that were true, she’s still dating Dean” Luna bought the quills, and they walked out of the shop and headed towards Honeydukes.
Luna’s POV
“So how long have you liked her?” Luna asked, Luna didn’t know how she felt about this conversation, she was glad to have Harry confide in her but there was a niggling feeling in the pit of her stomach that said she didn’t like where this as going. The thought of Harry and Ginny made Luna’s mind race why don’t I want him to like her? Am I being protective over Ginny? Of course, I’ve always been fond of Harry but I didn’t think I’d be jealous of Ginny! Just ignore it, Luna… “I’m not sure, I only really realised it this term but I guess the feeling have been growing since the summer” Luna nodded to show she was listening “at first I tried to dismiss it you know? I thought I was just getting protective, because she’s Ron’s sister? Its like she was my sister n a way, but when I saw her kissing dean…” Harry’s eyes narrowed and his voice quietened. They had reached Honeydukes, Harry held the door open for Luna and she skipped into the shop. “I think I’ll get part of Ron’s present from here, do you want anything Luna?” “No, thanks” she said and se drifted to the other end of the shop.
Harry bought Ron a deluxe box of chocolate frog cards and a bunch of sugar quills. As they left Harry asked where she wanted to go next “there’s a jewellery shop down the road, I was thinking of getting Ginny a bracelet or something?” “Okay sure”
Harry’s POV
This is a jewellery shop? It looks like Professor Trelawney has thrown up in here! The front of the shop was a deep red paint that was peeling off in more than a few places; the large circle window in the centre of the shop was draped in about 50 different shawls. The door, which was towards the left, had an advertisement for what looked like an all-ghost choir called The Darling Deads. The sign hanging over the shop read ‘Madam Anaelle’s’. The place had an air of quiet oddity. The building seemed to stand out yet fit into Hogsmead; Harry was surprised that he had never seen it before. As they crossed over the threshold, the mat that Harry was now standing on sung them a welcome into the shop. “Who are The Darling Deads?” Harry said to himself, Luna laughed. The inside of the shop was draped in different coloured shawls, it looked like a tent , there were beads hanging with the shawls from the low, curved celling and millions of tiny little balls of light zooming around above their heads. As far as Harry could see the shining orbs were the only source of light in the room. There where cabinets and tables and stools everywhere draped in cloth and on them were individual pieces of jewellery. From tiny rings to grand headdresses, this shop had everything.
“Wow.” Harry exclaimed. At that moment a large woman appeared in the doorway at the other end of the room, she had long, brown ringlets that made her round face seem young and she wore bright blue robes that flow around her like waves. “Luna my dear, how are you?” the woman said in soft almost French accent. “I’m good thank you Madam Anaelle, this is my friend Harry” Luna nodded towards Harry “Pleasure to meet you Harry” she nodded “Now what can I do for you today?” Luna looked at Harry and said “we’re looking for a present for my friend Ginny” Madam Anaelle nodded, she walked over to a section of the store that looked like it was made for Luna specifically, Luna danced after her, “oh wow I love this, come here Harry, look!” Luna had picked out a small gold necklace with tiny wings that in the centre seemed to form an almost heart. “They look like eagle wings, for Ravenclaw,” Harry said. Madam Anaelle smiled “They are the wings of Eros, God of Love” Luna’s face fell a little, “never mind” she sighed and moved on along the isle. Harry watched her go, a strange sensation running through is body, and he wanted to buy the necklace for Luna. He picked it up and held its delicate chain between his fingers. Harry decided to buy it, he looked up to see Madam Anaelle looking at him intently, “er, how much is this?” Harry asked quietly “30 galleons” she replied “I’ll take it, just don’t tell Luna” he said Luna was intently staring at an emerald hat, Harry smiled at her expression of concentration. Madam Anaelle led Harry over to the till quietly and made the transaction, Harry discreetly slid the necklace into his robes. They joined Luna who was still looking at the hat – “I don’t think green is really Ginny’s colour” Harry joked, Luna laughed “I don’t know what to get her!” Harry thought…
“What about something with a horse on it? Since her patronus is a horse right?” he turned to Madam Anaelle “do you have anything with a horse on it?” Luna grinned “Harry that’s perfect” Madam Anaelle smile and said “yes I think I do, wait here” she strode of to the back room. She returned 5 minutes later with a small purple box and handed it to Luna.
Luna’s POV
Luna opened the box slowly to reveal a glowing silver bracelet with a single charm, a galloping horse. Luna’s face broke into a smile and she said “this is exactly perfect, what do you think Harry?” “I think she’ll love it” Luna paid for the bracelet and they said their goodbyes and left the shop. “where next Harry?” “It’s getting darker now, we should get a drink and then head back to the castle.” The sun had begun to set in the sky and night was falling on them, it wasn’t safe to be outside at night these days. “Okay, Hogs Head?” “er maybe the Three Broomsticks would be better at this time” he replied looking suspiciously in the direction of the inn.
An hour had passed since Luna and Harry had arrived at the Three Broomsticks, so caught up in their conversation had they forgotten the time. The sun had nearly completely set over Hogsmead. Harry and Luna jumped up and ran out of the door and straight to the castle just as it turned dark. They reached the entrance hall out of breath and laughing. When they had both caught their breath, Luna said “thanks for a nice day Harry” she squeezed his arm , Harry looked down at her and smiled “thanks for keeping me company!” he replied Luna noticed Harry lean into her hand when she touched him. Why did he do that? She thought to herself and mentally shook out the thoughts in her head. No. Harry smiled again and said goodbye, Luna waved as Harry watched her skip away.
Later that night when Luna was in bed her thoughts drifted to the day’s events, I think I like Harry Potter. But Harry likes Ginny! She tried to convince herself, how has this happened I care for him as a friend, I thought that’s how I felt, now I feel this? No I need to be a good friend for Ginny, who has always liked Harry, but also be a good friend for Harry and help him with Ginny. I must ignore my feelings.
