The Phone Call
Chapter 4
After about 12 minutes of running around the house trying to catch Jack, Peter finally got too worn out to take one more step so he went and threw himself on the old family couch. Even though Peter doesn’t live with Jack’s family they still treat him like family. Jack’s Mum came downstairs and caught sight of Peter.
“Hi darling, sorry about Jack, he can just get a bit embarrassed sometimes. But of course you’d know that since you have been best friends for years. Fancy a cup of tea?” asked Jack’s Mum.
“No thank you, but thanks for the offer. I am just about to head back home. I’m sorry for bothering you Mrs. Higgs” said Peter trying to be as polite a s possible whilst getting up from the couch. He then stretched his legs out and started to walk towards the door.
“Hang on darl, May I ask you a question?” pleaded Mrs. Higgs, also walking with a bit of a hop to catch up to Peter.
“Yes, of course. What would you like to ask?” answered Peter
“Have you got your letter yet, you know, into war. Jack would like to go with you.”
“Uh yeah I’ve got it. Look, sorry, but I really need to head home. See ya Mrs. Higgs!” Peter called shutting the door before Mrs. Higgs could ask anymore about the letter.
Watching Peter leave from the window, she sighed to herself as the reminder of Jack’s situation hit her again.
“You have got to be kidding me!” said Mum to the army force on the phone at dinner later that day “I specifically asked for a house as far away from the camp.” Lately Mum has been a bit uneasy about leaving, especially because the horses aren’t fully trained. Fortunately, Jack’s allergic reaction has improved however he was still wary of everything he went near.
“If there are no more house’s where I want them, make one!” She yelled with anger hanging up the phone.
