The Reaction
Chapter 3
A couple of days later Jack was making tea for the family when he overheard his parents disputing whether or not to tell Harper about leaving just yet. Finally after about 6 minutes of the repetitive back and forth fight Jack stepped in.
“Excuse me, sorry to interrupt this annoying argument-”
“We are NOT arguing Jack” Mum butted in. For some reason the children aren’t allowed to butt into conversations but adults can.
“Okayyyy. Why don’t you just go up to Harper’s room and ask her if she likes her school, her home etc.” said Jack, with a smirk. He proudly walked out of the room, his smile going from one ear to the other.
About half an hour after tea Jack was spread out like a starfish on his antique wooden bed with a navy blue doona. He was imagining what life would be like during the war. Hopefully their entire family will survive. He has heard alot about war and how not too many people have survived. Just as Jack decided to get out of bed, he’s legs felt like jelly. Then everything went dark. Jack had fallen asleep.
Not for long though, after almost five minutes he woke up. Jack was woken by the sound of someone sobbing. He instantly knew that it was his sister. Debating whether or not to go check if she was alright, Jack rubbed his sore, hayfever eyes, threw his blanket off him and got out of bed. Jack had decided to check on Harper. Just as he walked into her bedroom, Harper stopped crying and burst out into laughter. Jack knew then and there that he had made the wrong decision about checking on Harper.
“What is wrong with your face?!” Blurted out Harper in fits of laughter. Jack sprinted to a mirror only to see horror. He’s face was swollen, with red blotchy rashes and watery eyes. Jack immediately thought he had hayfever. Believe it or not, Jack did have hayfever, but was only allergic to certain animals. He was only allergic to cats, rabbits, rodents and a few other animals, he certainly wasn’t allergic to his pets - horses, dogs and birds. Jack's face looked like a nightmare! His sister didn’t help either. He could still hear her laughing from down the hallway. Boy did he hate his sister sometimes.
“Jaaaaaaaack, Peter is here!!” called Mum from the living room, the next morning. No way was he going to let Peter see him when he was having a really bad allergic reaction. He had no idea what to do.
“I am coming up now Jack!” screamed Peter at the top of his lungs.
“NO!” replied Jack in a really worried voice.
“Whyyyyyy?” asked Peter
“Uhhh...Because I am really sick. And it’s well… it’s not really pretty.” added Jack.
“Jack come on, it’s not like I haven't seen you vomit before” Just as Peter was saying that, he barged through the bathroom door, only to see a hideous face staring straight back at him.
“AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!” Peter screamed while jumping back. Mum heard the scream and ran up the stairs to see what was wrong. She too saw only horror!
“HOLLY HEAVENS!” Blurted out Mum “Jack what happened to you?!”
Just to make the problems worse, Harper came into the bathroom only to start laughing even louder than last night. Without saying a word, Jack sprinted out of the bathroom in the blink of an eye. Following him, Peter cried “Jack, come on...we were only joking, plus, it’s not really that bad.” He lied.
