The Letter

Chapter 1
1939, WWII

Everyday Jack anxiously checked the mail waiting for the letter he desired. A request for WWII. As he rode past his mailbox one frosty Winter’s morning, he caught a glimpse of the life-changing envelope. He scrambled through his bag, like a cheetah hunting its prey, trying to find his key. Using the sun's reflection, Jack found the key to the mailbox. As he jammed it in he heard slow shuffles coming up behind him. Jack spun around and realized that it was his best mate Peter. He looked like something was up.
“Yo Peter! What’s up?” asked Jack, quite concerned.
“My parents are forcing me to go to war.” replied Peter looking down at the ridged, frost filled, concrete beneath them. Jack was quite astonished by this news as he hoped they’d both go as a team.
“Why don’t you want to go? I do.” comforted Jack, talking about himself as always.
“Because the thought of ever hurting someone scares me to death. Imagine having to-” Peter never finished his sentence, as he was cut off by the hungry neighs of Jill, the breath-taking, gorgeous quarter-horse galloping towards them.
“I was really eager to go together and get away from my sister...and maybe just a tinsy winsy bit of getting medals afterwards” blurted out Jack. “Plus I’m pretty sure Jill wants to go too,” he added with a chuckle. No matter what Jack said, Peter wouldn’t change his mind so they just raced into Jack’s family barn, with Jack clutching the half-opened envelope in his sweaty palms like his life depended on it.
After a while it was very awkward because all Jack could think about was that letter into war. Jack has always dreamt of going to war ever since he was a younger boy, but Peter was right. Hurting someone would be awful.
