Scamander Sisters
Chapter 1
Matilda inhaled the fresh air through the window, then turned to look round at her three other sisters. They were all busy packing, even though Matilda thought it was much too earlier to. But she, too, was excited, and starting chatting with her sisters, balling her hands into fists in excitement. She pulled out her own trunk and started to pack her clothes.
Matilda was just starting to go to Hogwarts and she couldn't wait. Dora, her older sister, was going to Hogwarts for her fifth year, and Lizzie, her second oldest sister, was in her third year at Hogwarts. And Beatrix, Matilda's younger sister, wasn't old enough to go to Hogwarts yet. In fact, she was two years old.
"Dora, tell me what it's like!" Matilda pleaded, looking up at her oldest sister. Dora sighed but smiled. "I've told you about a million times - all I need to say is... Hogwarts is wonderful. And anyway, I don't want to spoil anything. It can be a surprise!"
Matilda sighed in disappointment. She would have to wait a whole week before she could actually see Hogwarts.
The Scamander family had, of course, come to England because Hogwarts was in England. Matilda loved England, but she missed her home in New Zealand. Her cats were in New Zealand, and her aunt was looking after their dog. But Matilda had one pet here, a black owl. She loved her owl, which she had called Midnight, after how black the owl was, of course. Now Matilda walked over to Midnight's cage, and put her fingers through the bars of the cage. Midnight nibbled her finger affectionately.
"Come on, Matilda. Come and pack!" Dora called.
Matilda walked back over to her sisters, and picked up her clothes, placing them delicately into the trunk. After fifteen minutes, she shut her trunk and yawned. She picked up her book and started to read, 'History of Magic.' She had recently got her books from Diagon Alley about three days ago. Matilda had been fascinated by the place, and longed to go back their again. Her favourite places in Diagon Alley had been Flourish & Blotts, the bookshop, and The Magical Menagerie, the pet shop.
She was amazed by all the information that the book held about Hogwarts. She kept squeezing her fingers in excitement - she couldn't stop thinking about Hogwarts.
"Matilda! Could you come and pack?" Dora's voice sounded irritated. Matilda knew that Dora was still upset about leaving New Zealand. But she still loved Hogwarts, of course.
"Dora! We aren't leaving in a week! It's ages away," Matilda exaggerated.
"No it's not! Come on, Matilda."
Matilda sighed and picked up some books to put in her trunk. She did so, then turned to pat Lizzie's cat, Cornix. "Of course you are going to take him to Hogwarts, aren't you, Liz?" said Matilda, turning to look at her sister.
Lizzie smiled and said, "Of course I am. I wouldn't go without my Cornix." Lizzie leaned down to scratch Cornix under the chin. Matilda grinned. Lizzie loved cats, while Matilda preferred horses.
Matilda stood up, stretched and walked out of the room. She ran downstairs where her parents, Mr and Mrs Scamander were. "Hi, mummy - daddy!" Matilda walked over to hug her father.
Mr Scamander smiled and hugged Matilda back. "Have you been packing, missy?"
"Well - not exactly, though Dora keeps nagging me to," groaned Matilda. "And we're not going to Hogwarts until a week has passed!"
"Well, you should start packing though, Matilda. A week goes by quickly," said Mrs Scamander.
"Yes, I suppose," said Matilda. With a surge of excitement she remember her wand she had recently purchased from Ollivanders. With shining eyes, she looked up at her mother and asked, "Can I see my wand? I won't do any spells with it, of course - I don't know any, anyway! But can I just touch it?"
Mrs Scamander looked down at her daughter and smiled slightly. "Yes, you may. But remember -you are only allowed to touch it - no spells."
Matilda nodded and hurried off to her room. Her eyes ran over the room, then fixed on a small thin box. She gently took the lid off, and picked the wand up the wand delicately. She gazed at it, remembering the words that Ollivander had muttered to her. "It is a interesting wand, my dear. Beech wood with unicorn hair tail core. 13 3/4 inches. Precisely." Matilda stared at the wand. She could just wave it - right? Nothing would happen. And besides, she wasn't muttering weird incantations. So Matilda waved the wand, and got a fright - sparks flew from the wand and Matilda jumped back and dropped the wand as she did. After about ten seconds of the recovery from the fright, she was ashamed of herself. What if she had broken the wand?
Matilda bend down and picked up the wand, peering at it closely. Thankfully, the wand had not broken. It wouldn't be that easy to break a wand.
Matilda hastily put the wand back into the box, picking up a book instead. She jumped onto her bed, and began to read, falling slowly into another world.
