The Invite

Chapter 1
Elaine was sitting on her bed, braiding her dirty blonde hair, when Hannah burst in. Her face was flustered, yet glowing with happiness. She collapsed onto a bed, staring at Elaine as though she expected her to ask her why she was so happy. After a few seconds of Elaine completely ignoring her, she couldn’t stand it anymore.
“Ernie asked me out to the ball! Oh, isn’t it wonderful?” Hannah bubbled. Elaine widened her eyes in shock. “That’s amazing, Hannah!” Secretly, Elaine felt a twinge of jealousy. Even though she couldn’t possibly think of a boy she liked enough, (she thought of Gabriel for a split second, then blushed and dismissed the idea) she wanted to be asked to the ball, too.
“Laine, it’s a Saturday,” Hannah said, using the nickname she liked to call Elaine. “Have some fun. Go do something other than sitting in a dorm all day, braiding your hair.”
“Okay, okay,” agreed Elaine, rolling her eyes, but failing to conceal a smile. “I’ll come down in a minute.” Hannah nodded, satisfied, then bounced out of the room.
Elaine sighed and sat up, putting on her gray sweatshirt and black skirt. After pulling on her white knee-high socks and her black shoes, she walked out of the dorm.
After chatting with several fellow Hufflepuffs in the common room, Elaine walked into the halls by the kitchen. She raced down to the dungeon, where Gabriel was sure to be hanging out. Sure enough, he was leaning against the wall, surrounded by Slytherin girls.
Elaine felt rage consume her body, though she didn’t know why. Careful not to let anyone see her, she watched a particular pretty Slytherin girl, with dark hair and soft features, twirl her hair around her finger and flirt with Gabriel. He waved all of them away, looking very annoyed. Elaine’s body was washed with relief.
She stepped out of where she was hiding. “Hi, Gabe!” she said, waving. He walked up to her. “Hey!” he replied. “Where were you? I tried to look for you at the Hufflepuff table this morning, but you weren't there.”
“Oh,” Elaine said. “I, um, wasn’t very hungry.” It wasn’t a complete lie. Ever since the ball had been announced, Elaine had felt a fluttery feeling in her stomach every time she saw food. She hadn’t eaten in at least a day.
“Oh, well, I’ve been meaning to, um, ask you something.” Elaine’s stomach did a backflip. “Well,” Gabriel continued. “I was wondering if you...er...wanted to go to the ball with me. As friends, you know,” he added hastily.
“I would love to!” Elaine said, smiling. “Cool,” said Gabriel. “So, I’ll meet you at the doors of the great hall five minutes before the ball?”
“Not a minute later,” Elaine agreed. They shook hands, as if sealing a very important deal. “Now, young lady,” he said, mimicking a deep voice. “You have to eat something. Don’t starve yourself to death.” He handed her a pumpkin pasty from inside his pocket, which she ate gladly. It tasted a bit stale, but hey, it was food.
