A New Responsibilty

Chapter 1
Eloise slammed the door to the Headmistress's office, wrinkling the papers of expulsion in her hand. She slumped against the wall, tears of disbelief and frustrating cascading down her rosy cheeks. "Why?" she screamed, "why do I deserve this?" Her distressed voice bounced from wall to wall down the echo-y corridor. Eloise chucked the ball of crumpled paper out of her sight and just sat there... crying...

She didn't mean to send Felix to the hospital. It was an accident! Besides, it was more his fault than hers... if only that disgusting Gryffindor hadn't provoked, this situation would've turned out so much better! Eloise did recognize that she had some fault in his injury as well, after all she did push him down several flights of stairs, but come on! Her anger issues and stubbornness wouldn't allow her to accept this kind of punishment, this kind of treatment! Did the Headmistress and Administration really not know how vital her existence was here at Hogwarts?

Eloise continued to sob until no more light came through the windows. She just sat there, crumpled like those papers against the wall and trying to sniff away what was left of her grief. After about another hour or two, she had gathered enough strength to march herself down to the dormitories, pack up her belongings, and march right out of the castle. Five years she had been here, roaming these halls, practicing spells, trying to stay away from trouble (although it was hard for her to do that)... yeah, she was a Hufflepuff, but she felt that she couldn't ever live up to that title. Hufflepuffs were supposed to be kind, loyal, humble, hard-working; but Eloise had anger issues, she was stubborn, she was arrogant, she was troublesome, she never thought before she did anything... and not she was a disgrace and a failure. She had left a mark of shame on all of those other undeserving Hufflepuffs.

As Eloise started her way from the Headmistress's office, the door opened behind her. "Oh! You are still here, Eloise?" asked Headmistress McGonagall, her voice now sweet and pleasant rather than harsh and angry like it was earlier. "Well, come inside my office with me now, will you? I have some things to talk to you about."

Eloise stood there frozen a few seconds after Headmistress McGonagall had disappeared back into her office. Was she really going to go back in there and risk getting scolded again? Her head said no, but her gut said yes...

Somewhat reluctantly, Eloise decided to follow McGonagall. I'm so impulsive! Why aren't I in Gryffindor? Eloise asked herself for the millionth time since she had been sorted into Hufflepuff. Eloise entered the office a little cautiously, bracing herself for any anger that was to be directed at her, and sat down in the chair across from Headmistress McGonagall.

"Biscuit?" offered McGonagall as she opened a tin of them. Eloise shook her head. McGonagall put the tin down and adjusted her position on her chair. "So, Eloise, you know that you have been quite a bit of a troublemaker here the past few years, don't you?"

"Yes, ma'am," Eloise replied.

"And you do know that you have been making things here very stressful and unsafe for your teachers, your fellow students, and yourself, don't you?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"Now, I understand that you have some special magical abilities and strengths that you are unable to control - and, yes, you have some anger issues, too - but don't you think that there could've been things that you had done differently to prevent what all has happened?"

Eloise nodded.

McGonagall straightened her back and looked the scared girl right in the eyes. "Now, I am not going to let you continue courses here at Hogwarts, but I will give you the option to stay here under a condition... you must help out here around Hogwarts."

Eloise scoffed. "I'm not going to become the new Flich!"

The Headmistress looked at her blankly for a split second, then burst into a fit of laughter. "Oh, no, no! Not that kind of work!"

Now it was Eloise's turn to stare blankly. "Then what kind of work?"

McGonagall finished her laughing fit and turned deathly serious. "Dangerous work," she said in almost a whisper. "Work that will require magic - lots of it! - both good and bad magic..."
