Elaine's mistake
Chapter 1
Elaine O’Connor sat cross legged by the lake, her tears almost frozen to her face, her shaky breaths coming out in puffs of fog. She wrapped her yellow scarf tighter around her neck and squinted her eyes shut. There’s something wrong with me, she thought. I want to die…
She heard footsteps crunching in the snow behind her. She tensed. Everything went silent. The cheerful shouts of the other students, the sound of snowballs flying through the air, and even the chirps of the winter birds. All Elaine could hear was her own trembling breath and the sound of footsteps behind her. She saw someone sit down beside her in the corner of her eye, but she pretended to ignore the newcomer.
“Elaine.”
She turned around to see Gabriel Ainsworth. His black hair was whipped into his face by the wind, and his green scarf was wrapped tight around his neck. “What are you doing here?” she asked coldly, surprising herself. It surprised Gabriel as much as it surprised Elaine. “To listen,” he said simply.
Elaine stared at her boots. “I hit Jessa with the Bat Bogey Hex. She kept calling Hannah names. Then she said…” Elaine gulped. “She said I should have died, then proceeded to cast the Jelly-Leg jinx. I called her all sorts of awful things -” she paused, tears cascading down her face. “I should die, sh-shouldn’t I???”
Gabriel looked surprised, and then enfolded Elaine in his arms. She cried while Gabriel stroked her dirty blonde hair, telling her everything would be alright.
