The Stories of Survivors: Cho Chang

"Well, obviously, she's feeling very sad, because of Cedric dying. Then I expect she's feeling confused because she liked Cedric and now she likes Harry, and she can't work out who she likes best. Then she'll be feeling guilty, thinking it's an insult to Cedric's memory to be kissing Harry at all, and she'll be worrying about what everyone else might say about her if she starts going out with Harry. And she probably can't work out what her feelings toward Harry are anyway, because he was the one who was with Cedric when Cedric died, so that's all very mixed up and painful. Oh, and she's afraid she's going to be thrown off the Ravenclaw Quidditch team because she's been flying so badly." -Hermione Granger, Order of the Phoenix

Chapter 6

The first real meet up went, well I’ll just say it, fantastic. For the first time since Umbridge arrived, I was truly learning defensive spells. I felt so alive in the classroom and my energy just kept adding whenever Harry walked past. Each time a meeting came about on our coins, my heartbeat went faster than ever. These meetings were the highlight of my year so far, and a little attention from Harry never hurt anybody.

Before I knew it, the castle was decorated with holly and the Great Hall filled with towering Christmas trees. The grounds were covered in a blanket of crisp, white snow. This was my favorite season at Hogwarts. Christmas was coming and I surprisingly was excited to get home. I would finally talk to my parents about what happened at the end of last year. Not the twisted version I’d explained to them in the summer.

It was the day before break, and I was eating breakfast in the Great Hall. It was snowing outside, and I was enjoying a hot cocoa and cinnamon bun with Luna. I suddenly heard a buzzing in my pocket and found my coin alerting me. Luna’s was going off too. We sprinted to the Room of Requirement and got inside without anyone watching. It was the final meeting before break and Harry explained he was going to teach us a basic Patronus charm. I couldn’t wait.

“Hey Cho, how’s it going?” Harry asked, after everyone got started.

“I’m getting a little bit of the Patronus, but I can’t get a full one.” I replied.

“Ok, well just keep trying. It was like that for me too.”

By the end of the lesson, I still hadn’t gotten it but as everyone left the room, I lingered by the picture of Cedric taped up on one of the walls. I smiled and a tear rolled down my face. I heard a noise behind me and turned to see Harry standing there.

“Sorry,” he said, “I didn’t realize you were still here. Are you alright?”

“Yes,” I told him, wiping my eyes, “Yes, I’m fine. So, what are your plans for Christmas?”

Harry stepped a little closer, “Staying here as always. What about you?”

“I’m heading home for a bit.”

Harry took another step and a breath caught in my throat. He looked upwards and I followed his gaze to the ceiling.

“Mistletoe.”
