Chapter Four: My Car is Stolen by a Terrible, Horrible Theif
Chapter 4
That night, I could hardly sleep. Thirteen years old and I had my very own car! What my friends would say! What Gram and Pop would say! What Aunt Rose would say! (She had always wanted a fancy car to impress my mom.) I suddenly realized something. In all the excitement, I had forgotten to call Mason. I sat up.
“Wonder if he’s awake.” I whispered. I glanced at the clock. 11:19 pm. Hmm. I reached over to my phone on the bed stand. I wasn’t supposed to have my phone in my room for some reason, but I was texting and calling my friends to tell them about my car earlier. I scrolled down my contact list. Mason was near the bottom. I hadn’t called him since December 30, when he went back to college. Now it is April. I clicked on his name and inserted a picture of my car and texted, ‘Won a car at the game show today! 4 real, not joking. Miss you a lot! By the way, how’s Lanton treating you?’. He liked Lanton. He had always wanted to go there, since he was getting interested in college. I lay back in bed.
About a minute later my phone buzzed. I reached over excitedly and saw he had texted back, ‘No way, I’ll have to borrow that...BTW, Lanton’s great. Favorite teacher is Mr. Lern (Not kidding, that’s his name) Don’t go off and drive that car on your own...without me! I’m coming home for spring break. My spring break is April 5-13. I’ll take you on some ‘errands’. Don’t get kidnapped!’ I smiled. The ‘don’t get kidnapped' thing is a joke between Mason and I, because one time Aunt Rose surprised me and picked me up from behind, and I thought I was being kidnapped and yelled to Mason. I texted back ‘Miss you!’. I wanted the conversation to last longer, but I didn’t know what to say.
The next morning, I got up and pranced around my room. I even got dressed and brushed my hair even though I don’t normally get dressed as soon as I wake up. I usually stayed in my pajamas until my parents forced me to get dressed. I hummed as I jumped downstairs.
“Gooood morning! My car wasn’t stolen right” I sang to my mom. It looked like my dad wasn’t up yet. He usually wasn’t up until later. I looked out the front window to see that my car wasn’t there.
“Mom, my car is gone!” I shrieked. My mom got up and looked out.
“It is gone!” She gasped. “Go tell your father...unless.” She got an annoyed look on her face. She went upstairs. I heard her yell, “Dave! Dave you better…!” She came back down.
“He’s not here.” She muttered. “He must’ve taken the car.” My mom reached for her phone. I knew exactly what she was doing. The innocent ‘Oh I’m just calling to check in-wait you’re gone-oh I didn’t know, come back before I come to you and destroy you!’. It happened a lot.
“Hi honey, are you out of bed yet? You must still be in bed or in the bathroom...oh by the way, someone’s stolen Annabeth’s car! When I find this thief, I’m going to call the police, and make sure they take him to Cornethian Prison, and hang him by his toes, and never give him Mocha Ice Ice cream ever again!...You took it? Oh, okay...bring it back right now! You know very well…” I walked out of the room. I decided to sit down on the porch outside. I saw my neighbor ride his bike down and stop in front of my house.
“Hey, Annabeth!” He called.
“Hi, Sam.”
“I heard you got a car! Where is it?” Sam asked eagerly.
“Honestly, Sam, I have no idea.” I muttered. “My dad took it out for a spin.”
“Oh.” He sounded disappointed. “Let me know when you have it. By the way, what color? What model? Describe!” I told him it was a Nimari Ct-10 and it was blue.
“Royal blue? Robin’s egg blue? I need more information!” Sam urged.
“Like...like...well not really the sky color...kind of…”
“That blue?” Sam pointed to our neighbor’s baby blue house.
“No…”
“That blue?” He pointed to a bright light blue slug bug.
“No...it’s…”
“That blue?”
“What blue…Dad!” My dad drove my car down the street, parking in front of our house. I ran down to greet my dad (and yell at him). Sam’s mouth hung open.
“Dad, you took my car!” I checked the car for scrapes.
“Yes, I did.” He admitted.
“It’s okay, you didn’t blow it up.” I patted his arm. My dad suddenly jumped.
“IT’S AN AMAZING CAR!” I jumped.
“Jeez, Dad. Yes, it is.”
“That’s your car?!” Sam ran over to it. My dad groaned. For whatever reason, he didn’t like Sam.
“Woah!” Sam climbed in. “Wow, Mr. Randman! You get to drive this thing!”
“Yep, oh hey I think that’s your mom calling, Sam.” My dad said. Sam’s mom actually was calling, but it wouldn’t be the first time if my dad lied to get Sam away.
“Sheesh, she needs me again?! COMING! Later!” Sam rode off.
“Dad, what were you doing with my car?” I turned back to my dad. He shifted.
“Driving…”
“Dad, you took it to work, didn’t you?”
“I don’t have work today.” He protested.
“Yeah, but Mr. Winston does.”
“Okay, okay, you got me. Let’s go get some waffles.”
