Chapter Three: The Journal

Chapter 3
On the first page, there was a date at the top, and the curvy handwriting below.
March 26, 1990

'I got this notebook at Sheila’s Bed and Breakfast. The waitress Diane gave it to me. She insisted I could use it in the future if I found ‘the other piece’. I’m not sure what the other piece is, or how it will help, but I do need the help.'

Kathryn turned the page.
December 12, 1990

"I went back to Sheila’s Bed and Breakfast to ask about the missing piece to the journal. Diane wasn’t there, but a kind man was, in the kitchen. He said Diane was taking a day off. We talked for a while and ended up making plans to go out to lunch this weekend. His name is Dan Kollins. I am excited for this weekend!''

Kathryn couldn’t believe it. This was how her mom and dad met! There could be more, like why her dad left or what her mom was doing driving so far away from home the night she died. She turned the page and continued reading. She flipped through so fast, she only caught bits of the writing.

"Dan took me to dinner at Lavanzo’s. Brunch was so much fun, Dan and I went to The Brunch House. I still don’t know what the missing piece is. Dan and I have been dating for three years! I need the help very soon, but I can’t figure it out! Dan proposed!"

Almost there.

"I found out I was pregnant today. The wedding was ten months ago, and Dan and I couldn’t believe it."

And finally, she found what she was looking for.

"Kathryn Rose Phoenix was born two days ago, on July 19, 1997. Dan has become increasingly furious and angry. "

Kathryn flipped to the next page.

"Dan told me he couldn’t stay and left. I would’ve been sad, except he told me this the day after our fight. During the fight he said he had better things to do and someone named “Bolin” was expecting him. He insisted I’ll never see him again. He disappeared. I hope Kathryn will be better off without her dad."
Kathryn wanted to keep reading but couldn’t. Her dad left because some guy named “Bolin” was expecting him? He disappeared? Sudden, loud, footsteps interrupted her thoughts. That would be the chief coming down the hall.
Kathryn wanted to keep the notebook but Smithstone said it would be evidence. But her mom was killed in a car crash. The only evidence was her car. It crashed. That was a car crash.
Kathryn would have to continue reading later to see why her mom was driving far away from home. She stuffed the notebook in her travel bag and covered it with clothes. The chief opened the door.
“Want to keep looking?” He asked.
“Yeah.” Kathryn nodded. “I just want to find some pictures and stuff.” Smithstone nodded but didn’t leave.
“Uh,” He said uncomfortably. “I know Celia died in a car crash-”
“She wasn’t murdered.” Kathryn insisted.
“Yes, there is the possibility she was murdered, but Samuel Baker had something else to say. We interviewed this man, named Samuel Baker yesterday. He was driving in the same lane as your mom. He said they were talking then had to drive home. He said your mom seemed really upset and was insisting that something bad would happen if ‘they got her’ and they were driving and suddenly her car just swerved off the road. He thinks she killed herself.”
Kathryn gasped in horror. “NO!” She screamed. “She wouldn’t! I called her two nights before she died! She would never! Samuel is lying!”
“He was a close friend of hers-”
“What evidence is there of that?! My mom never mentioned a Samuel Baker!”
Kathryn ran out of the room, carrying the Album with her. John Smithstone did nothing to stop her.
