Chapter Eight ~Jase~

Chapter 9

After Tracy had called me the other day I couldn't sleep. Memories and nightmares of the mall came crashing down on me when I tried to go to sleep. So I didn't. I walked right to Tracy's house and waited on her porch step.

I knew that my dad and mom would be furious but I didn't really care much. I couldn't stay at home when today was the day that I, Tracy, and Jessica would check out Littleton's mall to see if they could find anything. Anything leading to the killer of Olivia.

I heard the door open and close to Tracy's house and I shot to my feet.

"Jase? What are you doing here?" Tracy asked, standing outside her door. "You know we are all supposed to meet at the mall at 10am. It’s 8am."

I nodded. "I know. I just kept thinking about Olivia. I couldn't stay at my house." I rubbed my eyes, still tired. "Is Jessica still coming?"

"Yeah," Tracy said. "But when I called her on the phone she didn't answer. I'm sure she is fine. Probably problems with her father."

"Oh," I haven't talked to Jessica in a while. "What do you mean?"

"I meant that her father is heartbroken from the death of his wife. Jessica told me he isn't the same."

"Okay," I replied, yawning. "If we aren't meeting up right now with Jessica then maybe we can get some breakfast?"

Tracy snorted and rolled her eyes. "Fine. But don't get too much."

"Very funny." I murmured.

Since Tracy could drive, she drove us to a diner about 20 minutes away from Littleton's mall. I got some pancakes, sausages, and a glass of orange juice. Tracy got a breakfast sandwich and some kind of smoothie.

"So then why did you get out of your house early?" I was saying.

"'Cause I was going to wait outside until 10..." she shook her head. "That's exactly what you were doing. Right?"

"Yes," I answered, eating a soaked pancake. "But seriously...do you think we will find anything different then what the police found?" I mumbled, chewing.

"Yeah. I think there is something they didn't find. That was just for us that the man left."

I choked on my pancake. Did she mean the note that I found? How did she find out? Maybe she didn't know?

"Jase!" Tracy patted my back until I carefully swallowed the food.

I slowly ate and when I was finished Tracy paid the bill and we both went outside. Now was the time to tell her about the note.

"So I found a note the day of Olivia's death..." I said slowly, bracing for impact.

"You did? Why didn't you tell me?" Tracy sat on a nearby bench and I sat beside her. "What did it say?"

“Maybe I should show you later.”

Tracy shook her head, her legs crossed over each other. “Come on, Jase! Just tell me what it said.”

I glanced over at Tracy but kept my eyes to the ground. I remembered the note easily as if it was not several months ago of Olivia's death. "If you come after Olivia I will make the three of your lives a living nightmare." I said quietly. I wiped my face with my hand to find tears. I hadn't even felt them coming.

"Oh, Jase..." Tracy rubbed her temples with her hands. "Why didn't you tell the police? Or even me?" I could tell she was looking at me.

I looked up to find Tracy actually looking ahead of her and not at me. I felt a little relief. I didn't like to see her eyes that almost always held that seriousness. "You and Jessica had a lot of things on your mind with Olivia and I just didn't want to bring that pain back. Besides, I just didn't think it was important. The black masked man is gone and Olivia is too. What's the point?" I knew I was acting depressed, which wasn't normally my style, but the talk of Olivia made me feel more broken than ever. Especially with the person making those cruel blogs about Olivia and the day being fake.

"That's true." Tracy said. "But you should've at least told the police. This is evidence of her murder. That it was real."

"I didn't want to!" I bolted upright off of the bench. My legs were weak so they came out under me, making me fall to my knees. I gritted my teeth through the pain. "It was the one thing that I had from Olivia except the video game that she dropped. I needed the note to convince myself that she's gone. But I know she isn't."

Tracy was still on the bench but she had one hand outstretched toward me. I grabbed her hand and she helped me onto the bench. "I'm sorry, Jase, but you have to show that note to the cops. And to me and Jessica too. This is evidence to help to find Olivia or....at least the killer."

"But I thought you wanted us to go to Littleton's mall to find Olivia." My voice was starting to fume with anger. "Not to find the damn killer."

Tracy sighed and leaned back until her head touched the top of the bench. "She's gone, Jase. At first I may have thought that she wasn’t but now...she is just gone." she closed her eyes.

I glared at her. "You don't know what you are talking about. You were never that close to Olivia as me and Jessica is. You know nothing. She is alive and well and we are going to find her." I got to my feet.

Tracy sat up, her eyes still closed. "Jase, come on. She is gone and deep inside you know it. She would've come. I know I have only been friends with her for 3 years but I still care about her. It’s been too long. She’s gone.”

“Shut up, Tracy!” I shouted. People going into the diner looked over at us with unease and annoyance.

She stood up alongside Jase. "Jase, please. I invited the two of you to find some evidence to why the killer killed Olivia. The police and detectives are ready to drop the case soon."

I breathed deeply and lowered my voice. “No. Who cares? Is that all you care about? To find evidence?”

Tracy winced. "No. But we need evidence to find Olivia." Then I heard her say something quietly. "If Olivia is alive that is."

I ignored Tracy and walked toward her car, which was a small blue SUV. "Let's go. Now." This time I didn't hide my anger. Tracy nodded slowly and unlocked the car. "Don't be mad at me, Jase. I am doing what is right."

I jumped into the passenger seat. "Yeah. Doing it for yourself.”

During the ride to Littleton's, Tracy and I didn't speak. I wouldn't want to either for her desire to hunt the black masked killer but not caring about Olivia. The more closer we got to the mall uneasiness became to creep into the car. When we stopped in front of the large building, I hesitated but Tracy got out of the car and grabbed a crowbar out of her trunk.

"Come on." she said. "There should be a hole in the wood on the doors." She started walking toward the building but stopped when she saw Jessica petaling her bike not far away.

“Wait guys!” Jessica yelled.

I smirked a little but looked over at Tracy. "Were you the one who opened the door?" I asked, pointing to the large hole in the wood.

Tracy smiled as she walked over to Jessica. "Yes. That was me."

Jessica smiled a little as Tracy came over but she didn't look over to me once. Tracy helped Jessica with her bike and then the three of us went inside of Littleton's. Tracy then had to go into her trunk again for defenses for me and Jessica before going inside again.

The inside of Littleton's smelled horrible and it was incredibly dark. We all turned on our flashlights and looked around. Most of the stores were closed but some you could tell had the sheltered doors closed halfway, as if they were in the middle of closing up.

I walked a little down the hall and spotted GameStop. I smiled a bit because that was the store that Olivia got that anime game. We both had gaming in common. I frowned because I had hoped me and Olivia could play games at my house that day of her death.

"Jase!" Tracy called. "We found something."

I went over to the two girls. Jessica looked up to meet my eyes but she flinched and looked away. Why Jessica wouldn't talk, look, or be by me was a mystery. I had done nothing to her.

I looked at where Tracy was. She held a small brown wallet. She handed it to me. I flipped it open and found a license ID, some cash, and a picture of a family. My face went pale. The picture had Olivia and Olivia's mother in it along with a man with some hair.

I looked at the License and it read Kyle Jacobs.

"What the hell is this?" I said a little bit too loud. "Why does this have Olivia and Mrs. Jacobs." Then it hit me like a freight train. "This dude is Mrs. Jacobs husband. You know the one that walked away even though he was still married to Olivia's mother and nobody talked about?"

Jessica and Tracy nodded. "Why is his wallet here then?" I asked no one in particular.

"I dunno." Jessica murmured quietly. "Maybe he was at the mall a while ago and dropped his wallet. He must've forgotten it here."

“No,” Tracy turned toward me. “Doesn’t it seem weird to you guys that his wallet is here and that he must've been at this mall at some point? Somehow it seems as if Kyle was at the mall the day of Olivia’s death.”

"Yeah that is weird." I agreed. "Do you think..." I knew exactly what Tracy was getting to.

"Yes!" she exclaimed, getting to her feet. "Kyle is a suspect. Why else would there be blood on the wallet?" Tracy grabbed the wallet from me and showed us a mark on the back of the wallet. A small red smear.

Jessica's face went pale. "Oh my god. Why would Olivia's father kill Olivia though?" she shook her head. "It doesn't make sense. Olivia doesn't know her father only that he vanished. Maybe he just was here at some point. Don't get into detective mode, Tracy, and do something that I wouldn't do."

Tracy looked over at Jessica for a moment before speaking, her voice soft. "I'm not going to hunt down Kyle, if he is the killer. I am just going to find more evidence to give to the cops so they can keep Olivia's case open." she turned away and motioned with her hand for Jessica and I to follow her. She started down the hall.

We followed Tracy farther down the mall's wide hallways. We walked until Tracy made a stop at what I recognized was the spot that the man with the black mask had trapped Olivia. The spot had yellow and black caution tape around it.

"We have to go through this whole mall. The police didn't think of doing that. Maybe if we are lucky we will find more evidence or even the killer." Tracy pointed her flashlight down two different hallways. "Jase, take the right. Me and Jessica will take the left."

I hesitated but nodded and started heading down a hall.

We were gonna find Olivia or the killer.

Now or never.
