Leading up to the meeting of the Golden Trio in Diagon Alley, Hermione spent her summer with her parents. The family traveled to France for holiday and explored the countryside and cities. Once at Diagon Alley, she treated herself to a pet from the Magical Menagerie: a half-Kneazle cat named Crookshanks. While everyone was against this purchase, Hermione felt an incredible connection to the creature, which then blossomed into a beautiful friendship. The introduction of Crookshanks naturally created increased tension between her and Ron, since Crookshanks would constantly chase after the Weasley’s pet rat Scabbers, now known to be Peter Pettigrew in Animagus form.
Once aboard the Hogwarts Express, the Golden Trio nestled themselves into the only open compartment, which featured a special member of the Hogwarts Staff sleeping against the window. With Hermione’s quick wit and observancy, she discovered that the sleeping man was “Professor R. J. Lupin” as designated on his trunk. The rest of the train ride involved Harry spilling all the beans to Ron and Hermione about his summer and the suspicious Sirius Black character. Hermione is clearly suspicious of Black and continues to push her suspicions, as well as warn Harry about staying away from him. This discussion was interrupted by Neville and Ginny as they entered the compartment. All of a sudden, the train ride came to a halt all of a sudden when dementors boarded the train, searching for that same criminal. Professor Lupin saves the trio and friends with a Patronus charm. Lupin starts to feed everyone chocolate after the incident, as it is used to cheer up each victim. What an interesting way to start Hermione’s third year!
