Why J.K. Rowling Decided to Kill Sirius Black (Informational)
Chapter 4
In The Order of the Phoenix, Sirius Black dies in the battle at the Department of Mysteries. A lot of fans have wondered why J.K. Rowling gave Harry another tragic part to his life. There are, of course, fan theories, but Rowling has never stated outright why she killed such a beloved character.
One of the theories that some people have dug up is that Rowling wanted Harry to be more independent. While I can see where Harry may need that, he’s already had so much tragedy in his life, I don’t feel it is a very good reason.
Another piece of information that you can find if you search deep enough, is that Rowling wanted to kill Harry's father figure, although it is unclear why. She considered killing Arthur Weasley, but decided on Sirius instead. To many fans, though, this theory does not make sense because Rowling has also stated in many interviews she considered killing Arthur, but instead killed Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks because she wanted to keep the Weasleys a whole.
The most believable theory is one that takes a slightly different turn. Rowling has said this is one reason she had Sirius die, so thus it is true. She states that in book seven, Kreacher tells Harry about his former master Regulus Black. But Sirius had forbidden Kreacher to tell the Black family secrets to anyone, so in order for Harry to learn about one of Voldemort's Horcruxes, Sirius needed to die.
Of course, she could have decided to not have Sirius forbid Kreacher to tell anyone anything, but that would have brought up lots of questions about why Kreacher didn’t spill the information to anyone before then. That is the reason Sirius Black died, and if you think about it, it’s actually quite like all the others, but in a different way; he needed to die in order for Harry to kill Voldemort. Except he didn’t decide to die, his creator decided to have him die.
