Chapter 3
It’s only been fifteen minutes since you’ve arrived at Hogwarts, but it feels like you’ve been standing in this stairway for hours. You can faintly hear Professor Dumbledore’s voice from behind the massive wooden doors. You tap your foot impatiently, eager to finally have your true house revealed to you. Out of the corner of your eye, you notice Cedric seemingly absentmindedly picking at his thumb. You immediately realize what he’s doing. Slowly, you reach out your hand and slightly tap his. His gaze diverts to you, and you offer a smile.
Cedric stops fiddling with his fingers and opens his mouth to say something when the Head of Gryffindor house opens the doors, motioning for all of the first years to follow her inside. You start to move forward but stop abruptly in your tracks. There’s so many people....so much noise....you move backward, shaking your head. You bump into someone and gasp. Cedric holds you steady and comes in front of you.
“Y/n. Hey. Look at me.”
You look up at him with tears in your eyes and your lip quivering.
“It’s too loud, isn’t it?” He asks.
You shake your head yes and bury your face in your hands, embarrassed by the fact you can’t stand such a simple thing. Then, without notice, you feel Cedric’s arms wrap around you in a big bear hug. You freeze for a second, not sure what’s happening. Slowly, however, you relax your shoulders and return the embrace. You start to cry silently, letting out all the pent up frustration. Cedric just continues to embrace you, allowing you to be vulnerable.
Once you finish, you gently back out of the hug and wipe your blood red face of tears. Cedric smiles sympathetically and without another word, gently walks you forward into the dining hall. Luckily, there are a ton of first years so you both slip in somewhat unnoticed. You wait several minutes before Professor McGonagall, the same lady who had come through the doors, calls out the name Cedric Diggory. Cedric turns to you and crosses his fingers. You do the same.
Cedric walks confidently to the front where the Sorting Hat sits on a stool. McGonagall picks up the Hat, allowing for Cedric to sit. Once he’s seated, she places the Sorting Hat on the top of his head. In a split second, a cry of “Hufflepuff” is heard throughout the room. A gigantic smile appears on Cedric’s face, and he proudly takes his seat at the Hufflepuff table.
The next name called out is yours. You walk shyly up to the stool and shut your eyes tight once you’ve sat. You feel the Hat touch the tip of your head, not even fully covering your hair, and hear the same “Hufflepuff” cry. Opening your eyes, you spot Cedric standing and clapping. You smile and rush to the table, eager to be out of sight.
“I knew you’d be a perfect fit,” Cedric whispers in your ear. You turn to face him and give a thankful smile. You breath a sigh of relief as you realize you’re finally somewhere you belong—with someone who is willing to help you.
“Hogwarts might not be so bad after all,” You mentally conclude.
