Chapter 2
The train finally comes to a halt. You glance out the window and gape at the humongous castle just across the river. This should be giving you feelings of joy and excitement! Instead...your breathing becomes extremely shallow and your legs begin to tremble. The deafening noise of students’ voices outside permeates your brain, resulting in tears forming behind your eyes.
“Y/n? Hey, hey, what’s wrong?”
You glance at Cedric, who is kneeling in front of you, his kind gray eyes searching your face for signs of what’s upsetting you.
“Sorry...I-I had a panic attack...”
“Oh, y/n, I’m sorry.” Tenderly, he places his hands on your shoulders. “Here, take a deep breath,” He instructs.
You take in a shaky breath and release it.
“Better?” Cedric asks softly.
You nod and give a small smile. Cedric slowly gets up and extends his arm. You grab your bag and release another shaky breath. You take Cedric’s arm, but instinctively place your own protectively in front of your stomach.
“Close your eyes.” Cedric whispers.
You peer at him, confused.
“Trust me.”
Obeying his command, you close your eyes and grip Cedric’s arm to steady yourself. You hear the glass door slide open and you feel Cedric gently tug you forward. He walks you through the train, occasionally whispering words of caution so you don’t fall. Finally, he stops. “Step down,” He says quietly. You cautiously take a step down, tenderly landing your feet on pavement. You feel Cedric release your arm, signaling to you it’s okay to open your eyes.
Once your eyes are fully open, you take in your surroundings, admiring the beautiful evening sky. Your gaze rests on Cedric, whose gray eyes seem to be admiring you.
“Thank you, Cedric,” You remark.
“My pleasure, y/n. Would you mind if I stayed with you? Until we get sorted I mean.”
Stunned, you reply hastily. “Yes! I’d love that.” Both of you turn slightly pink, but your attention is diverted when a big voice shouts for the first years.
“First years, you’ll be with me!” Your eyes turn to a rather large man with a scruffy beard but a warm demeanor. He continues, “all o’ ya, come with me. Gather here. Yer luggage will be waitin’ fer ya at the castle.”
You glance at Cedric to confirm you two are going to be on the same boat. He immediately tilts his head in the direction of the river as if he read your mind. As you make your way through the crowd, Cedric asks you questions about your home. You describe the rural estate you live on and the animals that come to and fro every week. By the time you’ve arrived at the castle, you realize you’ve rambled on the whole time. You stop mid-sentence and stare at Cedric in astonishment.
Reeling back just slightly, he gives you a puzzled look. “Why’d you stop?” He asks.
“You-I-I talked that entire time, didn’t I?”
Cedric chuckles. “Yes, you did. What’s the matter with that?”
“That’s never happened before!”
“Well, I enjoyed it. You have a very interesting point of view, y/n.”
“I do?”
“Yes! I’d love to hear more again if you don’t mind.”
The tip of your mouth curves up slightly and your eyes soften. “I don’t mind at all,” You reply.
