Chapter 1
Looking back it wasn’t my best work but I was 14, probably 15 and quite a Defence against the Dark arts enthusiast. I hated the thought of disappointing anyone but at the same time I didn’t want to show off either.
It was just after dinner, not yet dark, and I thought it would be good to take a walk around the Black Lake. Ice was starting to form on the surface and it was the last opportunity to get out before the cold of winter really took its hold.
Suddenly I heard a rustling in the bushes behind me. I turned around, my hand creeping towards my wand, thinking that it was a creature from the lake or even the forest. It was a student from the year above me, a known bully and nasty piece of work. It seems that he had been in the bushes with a girl and now they and two more of their friends were now joining us.
I knew them well enough, they weren't in my house but I knew the two that had joined us were more for "threatening" purposes. They were the brawn and the other two were the brains. They started to circle me beating their fists in the palms of their hands. There was no way to avoid a confrontation. I tried to keep my eyes on all of them but it was hard. I raised my wand in the air.
"Periculum!" I tried not to shout, and red sparks flew out of my wand.
"Sending for help are we?" asked the girl. Her laugh was cold, "well we'll see about that, Volamucus!"
I dodged the hex and it landed in the chest of her friend on the other side of the circle who now started to sneeze bats out of his nose.
"Expelliarmus!" I cried, so loudly that two wands flew out of the hands of the 2 other boys. It was just me and the girl standing facing each other.
"So what are you going to do to me?" asked the girl. "you look young, what are you first year?"
Clearly she didn't know me from well Adam, "actually I'm a second year." I thought to myself. What would a second year know?
"Petrificus Totalus!" She froze and I ran back to the castle and back to the common room. Hopefully they wouldn't remember me for a while. At least I knew they would be found. The Professor would be coming any second. I had sent the distress signal after all.
