Chapter 1

The full moon cast light down upon the small town of Spirit. It threw shadows all over, darkening the ones that were caused by other things.

I was laying on the ground, as I do every night. The cemetery hasn't scared me for a few days now. Not sure how many though. I'm not sure why, just at one point it didn't, I felt comfortable here and returned every day after nightfall. The night was just beginning, it in it's early hours, so I stood up and dusted myself off before leaving the cemetery. Usually I spent all night here, but tonight I felt like walking around.

Kids and teenagers, with the occasional adult, were dressed in their costumes. No body gave me a hello, or even a passing nod. But I was used to it, no one ever really paid attention to me. Of course, I had put a lot of effort into my Santa's Little Helper outfit, showing off as much skin as I could without being totally naked, so I was a little disappointed when no guy even glanced in my direction.

What was wrong with me? Why did no one ever want to look at or talk to me? I used to be so popular, and then it all just stopped after that party a few days ago. It was probably Cathy Prynt. Ugh! That little slut. She's been jealous of me for the past two years, since our freshman year of high school. That was the year she claimed I stole her boyfriend, but everyone knows Logan chose to break up with her because he didn't want second best. He wanted first place. Me.

"I guess it's time to pay Cathy a visit," I whispered to myself, a smirk spreading across my lips.

Being me, I know everything about everyone at Spirit High. Of course, this was a small town, so there weren't that many secrets. But those that did have a secret or two, didn't have them from me.

I wasn't completely positive I knew where the Prynt house was, so I began asking around. Only thing is, Cathy must have spread some powerful rumor about me because no one was responding. Well, I guess it didn't really matter, the area wasn't too large and I could find it soon enough.  The leaves were rustling as the wind blew through them. Some of the people walking the shadowed streets had small jackets, though to me, with my minimal clothing, I didn't feel anything cold about the breeze.

My heels clicked softly against the street as I walked. I used to be somewhat of a heavy walker, but then it adjusted itself and now I could hardly be heard. For a while, I've wanted to sneak up on someone and scare them, hoping they wouldn't hear my barely audible foot falls, but I wanted to try it on a friend first and I hadn't seen any of them anywhere.

Cathy had thrown a Halloween party a few nights ago that I'd crashed, and she would be having another tonight, the actual Devil's Night. I am not toally sure why she had two. No, let me correct that, I am sure I did. Cathy had thrown the first party for everyone, so they all thought she liked them, this second one was just for the populars.

During my walk, I saw some familiar faces, people I see every day while walking down the halls at school. But they were bottom of the pyramid people, so I didn't pay them any attention, just like they didn't show me. Locating the house I recognized as the Prynt place, I walked up the small set of steps onto the porch and knocked on the door.

It was odd that they would have the door closed, as the music would be too loud to hear anything over it. Then again, I didn't hear any music, or see any flashing lights. What kind of party was this? Going over to the front window, which thankfully had it's curtains open, I peered inside. Three people sat inside, two on the couch and the other on the floor in front of them. Light was coming from the TV, though I couldn't find an angle so I could see what they were watching. Oh well, that wasn't the important thing.

Not one of these people looked like anyone I knew, and none of them were getting up to answer the door. Maybe they hadn't heard me. I went back to the door to knock again, but stopped when I saw the name on the mailbox that was put up on the wall just to the side of the door. Ruil.

O-kay, so I was at the wrong house. Thank God no one had answered the door, I would hate to be standing on front of total strangers in this outfit. Though, now that I think about it, that teenage boy inside that had been sitting on the floor wasn't bad. He was actually kind of hot.

So how was I going to find the Prynt house? And how had they moved so fast? It had been merely days since I was here last, how do you up and move like that? Brushing my golden blonde hair from my cinnamon brown eyes, I got off the porch and continued to walk down the street.

The lights from the street lights were glistening off the water on the street and sidewalk. Hmmm...I don't remember it raining. As I strolled, glancing at the houses as I passed, I tried to think of a plan, of some way that I could find the new Prynt house. Asking someone was the obvious way, but, of course, no one was listening to me. I even tried asking only boys, hoping my outfit would draw their eyes and make them want to help me, maybe more. But no one was paying attention to me.

I listened for blasting music to help me find the right house. I even tried listening to familiar people's conversations to see if any of them ere headed to the party. None of them noticed me standing close by. After eavesdropping on a few people, I finally got what I was looking for. Instead of departing from the group of unintentionally helpful teens, I just followed them to the right house.

Music reached my ears before too long, and up ahead I could see the flashing multi-colored lights shining off the damp ground. This was definitely it. Cathy may be a total bee-otch, but she knew how to throw a party.  The door was left wide open so the party goers could just in without having to wait for someone to answer. I followed the teens inside and was instantly swept up in a herd of people.
