Loud, Clangy Doorbell

Chapter 5
I stared at her. This morning, you were convinced he would think you were insane if you told him you could communicate with a bug.
She shrugged. “It’s not easy to hide things from him. He realized something was wrong right away. And besides, I’ll be safe from Dad. He doesn’t dare mistreat me when people are over.”
That’s good.
“Yeah. Anyways, I should start my homework.” She stood up and started to head out the door, and then turned around and smiled. “Want to help, seventy six year old brainiac?”

We finished Crystal's homework with ten minutes to spare. After talking with her for a few minutes, I found out these things about her:
She rarely trusted people. She kept important things to herself and her close friends. She was shy, but once you got to know her, there was a whole lot of sarcasm in there. She was incredibly smart for a human, and not just in academics. She was easily offended, as I quickly discovered.
I sure hoped this friend of hers was nice.
“‘Course he’s nice,” Crystal said, rolling her eyes and lounging back in her chair. “A mean Luke is an oxymoron. Except when he’s trying to defend the people he cares about.”
She tried not to show it, but I could tell she was proud to be one of those people. Her cheeks flushed while hearing me think this. Before she could speak, the doorbell rang.
It was a loud, clangy thing. I don’t know why it existed.
“It exists to let us know someone’s at the door,” Crystal said sarcastically, looking into the mirror and combing out nonexistent tangles with her hand.
A bit twitchy, are we? What is so special about this Luke person that you must brush your hair before he sees you?
She cringed and flipped around, glaring at me. “Specs, one more word and I will-”
Okay. I apologize.
I didn’t mean it, and we both knew it.
“Who knew such a little thing could be a pain?” She muttered on her way out.
Should I come with you? I thought after her.
She considered this, and said, “Come downstairs and keep an eye on Dad, just in case. And no stinging.”
Come on now. When have I ever stung your father?
She rolled her eyes again. “Haha.”
The doorbell rang again, and Crystal tripped over her feet in her haste to get to the door.
I couldn’t help but send an image of a smirk at her.
