Getting to Know the Human
Chapter 3
How do you SEE me?? I wondered.
"You're tiny," she admitted. "But I have contacts, and they're really powerful." She glanced towards the door and sighed. "I have to go to school. I can't believe this is real! Can you fly to my finger?" She stuck out a finger at me. I zoomed over to her and gave her a smile in my mind. Good enough?
"Yes!" She exclaimed, ecstatic. "I can't wait to tell- oh, wait. He's going to think I'm insane. Never mind."
Who? I thought, staring at her beadily.
"Oh, one of my friends. Luke." She looked embarrassed. "But I can't say that I can communicate with insects! What am I, mental?"
Enough about this Luke guy, I thought. How old are you? In human years?
"Fifteen. Sixteen in two months." She pulled a cabinet open and took out a spiky thing. She used it to comb through the tangles in her hair, not that there were many. When her glossy dark brown hair was in clean waves, she smiled at me. "If I'm imagining this, I'm crazy. I will see you in...seven hours. See you, Specs. I don't want to be late. And stay in here! Please don't leave!"
Will do, I thought.

But before she left the house, a roaring voice boomed, “What are you doing? You’re late! GET TO SCHOOL! And I’m not giving you a ride either!”
“B-but Dad, school is a mile away!” Crystal protested weakly.
Then I heard a sharp crack and Crystal yelping in pain. I left the bathroom, zooming toward the commotion.
A tall man with the same dark hair as Crystal towered over the girl, glaring. She was silently sobbing and there was a big, red mark on her cheek. The man raised his hand. “Do I have to do it again?” He said in a deadly voice.
“N-no!” She cried, and turned around and flung herself toward the door.
In a fury, I flew to the man and stung him hard on his arm. He roared in pain.
Sensing something was seriously amiss, Crystal grabbed her backpack and ran out.
I stung the man again, for good measure, and went back to Crystal’s bathroom.
Heh. I might be tiny, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a vicious bite.
