Crystal Chrysalis
Chapter 2
We met when she almost drowned me with a drop of water.
It is so annoying that, because of the annoying tiny bug I am, any little thing can cause me a lot of pain.
I had seen the girl come and go in the bathroom for days. I saw no one else, so I suspected she owned the bathroom. One day, I got curious enough to fly over to that place where she cleaned her hands with a substance that caused her hands to get all weird and bubbly. Then she rinsed it off with a flowing jet of water coming from the sink. After brushing her teeth (teeth have always intrigued me. True, they can eat with it. But why must they clean it?) and washing her face, she washed her hands again. And before I could move, a big droplet of water bounced from her hands and landed on me.
-
I couldn't breathe. I couldn't move. The girl didn't see me as she moved to the window and opened the curtains, dousing the room in light.
While she was passing me, she froze. Then I saw her dark blue eyes peering at me.
A human could see me.
-
"Ew!" She whispered at first.
Kind of ironic that the first word my future best friend spoke to me was 'ew'.
"What is that dirty thing? Why is it that color?" She muttered to herself.
I fluttered my wings weakly. She gasped. "A BUG?!" She said incredulously. "It's so tiny!"
But she spoke no more and grabbed the roly poly thingy that was white and produced long pieces of some sort of cloth.
"Its toilet paper," She laughed, and with a flourish she dried me in an instant.
I was barely thinking about drowning, because she had just replied to me.
A human had just spoke to me.
-
"It would be cool if I could understand you," she mused to me. Then she slapped her forehead. "I'm talking to a freaking BUG. My imagination..."
Of course. She had imagined I was thinking about the roly poly- toilet paper thing. Coincidence.
"It's not a coincidence," She said. She stared at me. "Wait. What? I could've sworn I heard a voice in my head."
She lifted me on the toilet paper and placed me on the window sill. "What's your name? Either you can talk or I'm going insane."
Specs, I thought.
She smiled. "Specs. I could start a whole creative story with this. Hey, Specs, I'm Crystal. Crystal Chrysalis."
You aren't imagining it! I shrieked in my head.
"Hmm..." She gazed at me, and then pointed at the bathtub. "Fly to the edge of that."
I fluttered my wings again. I wasn't really feeling up to it, as I had almost drowned, but I obediently flew to the bathtub. Soon her eyes were in front of me again.
"Wow," she said softly. "I can understand you."
Yes, I thought. You can.
