Marietta Edgecombe is just a victim, and she was forced to join the D.A. even though her mother worked at the Ministry. Then she “betrayed” the D.A. You technically don’t have proof that she rooted them out, besides Umbridge’s word which isn’t worth anything. For all we know she was given Veritaserum or maybe even tortured!

Then, for punishment, she was scarred for life. It greatly upset her. She was just a teen girl trying to cope with all of the stress and worry. And for that she deserves to be marked for life?! It's mental.

If it was discovered she was part of the D.A., her mother could have lost her job. Again, Marietta may have been subject to the Cruciatus Curse, or Veritaserum.

After all, in the movies it was Cho who rooted out the D.A., but that was only because Umbridge gave her Veritaserum.
