Lesson 2- Flobberworms and Horklumps
Flobberworms
- X classification, brown and identical on both ends,don't move much
- Live in damp ditches, blind (maybe) with no teeth
- Decompose within 3-7 minutes of death
- Herbivores- have taste buds (maybe)
- Secrete mucus- green and sticky (potion thickener and emulsifier- Wiggenweld potion)
- Can be summoned using the Summoning Charm (only creature)
- 10 inches long
Horklumps
- Bright, pink mushrooms; X classification; covered in black bristles
- Have mutated to different colours, maybe become immune to poisons (eg- Basilisk venom)
- Scandinavia and Northern Europe; breed quickly, Gnomes eat them, while they eat worms
- Nocturnal creatures, create a whistling noise
- Streeler venom removes them
- Using in Healing and Herbicide Potions
- Horklump juice- magical properties with other ingredients; stress the creature and collect its sweat
Lesson 3- Bowtruckles
- Tree guardians, hand sized, resemble a stick, 2 razor sharp fingers each hand, XX classification
- Can be aggressive, distracted by food
- Eat wood lice (Roly-Poly), over 5000 different types; fairy eggs (favourite)
- 20-30 eggs are great as a distraction
- Hollow bones, lightweight; the bones create a new creature once the old one dies
- Gender doesn't change, oldest is 400 years
- 200-450 AD enchanted sticks started to live on their own
- Neutral to wandmakers that have come to their tree before
- Know if a tree is sick, can contract the disease so move away
- Weak immune system, healing charms can save them
Lesson 4- Fairies
- Small humanoid creatures with wings; vain creature, love their wings
- Fight over mirrors and love to groom themselves
- Live in forests, eat leaves (don't like Bowtruckles)
- Lay eggs on underside of leaves, guarded heavily
- Up to 50 eggs, larvae are bright
- 6-10 days the spin a cocoon, hatch a month late to be fully grown
- Larvae wings are pale green, adults are different colours
- Males point at female wings and node, the female nodes back and they mate (or she buzzes and he leaves)
- Three by three foot space per fairy
- Fairy wings grow back in 4 weeks
- Wings used in Girding potion (endurance), larger the better
Lesson 5- Gnomes
- Brown, potato looking, 1 ft tall, Europe and North America
- Eat Horklumps, earthworms and vegetation
- Low intelligence, live in tunnels (1/2-1 mile deep)
- Grab its head and swing until dizzy, then through away (other will see this and leave after 5-6 other thrown)
- Jarvey will eat 1-2 gnomes, the others will leave
- Unknown is gnomes have magic or not
Lesson 6- Grindylows
- Small, pale green water demons with horns; XX classification
- Found in lakes (fresh water), sometimes eat humans (unlikely), but mostly fish and algae
- Like catfish, largemouth bass, tilapia, and carps
- Can be kept for short time periods in large tanks with lots of plants to hide
- Make homes out of plants, live births (twins are possible- male/female or 2 females (1 infertile))
- Have magic- create yellow sparks and move things
- Last attack was in 1679, wizard continually harassed the colony
- Most famous attack is Uric the Oddball (went crazy and fell into a lake)
Lesson 7- Imps and Jobberknolls
Imps
- XX classification; 6-8 inch, live in swampy marshland, dark brown to green; found in GB and Ireland
- Simple form of humour- tripping people for example
- Eat leaves, algae, fish/frog eggs and water bugs (can trap water bugs with small baskets)
- Live born (1-10 babies at once); stay in the nest for 3-5 days (it is then demolished by the parents)
- It is believed they have magic as strong as house elves (but not sure)
Jobberknolls
- Small, blue birds found in North America and Northern Europe; any climate (adapt well)
- Feather colour depends on food eaten (darker food, brighter colour); eat beetles and flies
- Great memory; make no sound until death (scream everything they have ever heard)
- Lay 2 eggs every two months; white with blue spots (blue changes depending on the mothers colour)
- Both male and female sit on eggs (17-21 days); male cares until 2 weeks old (the babies then leave)
- Mate for life and they die within 72 hours of each other
- Start breeding when 4 months old; feed young with creamy substance (second stomach made) called lait (french for milk)
- Silencing charms should be placed before they die; need large areas to live in (10 high by 15 long)
- Feathers used in memory and truth potions (shed naturally)
Lesson 8- Fwoopers
- African bird (orange, lime green, pink or yellow); their call drives people insane (monthly silencing charm needed)
- 12-15 inches tall; plume 2 inches tall; tail 2-3 inches tall
- Feet and shanks are bright orange with 3 toes and a hackle
- Eat small seeds (finch/parakeet feet is favourite) can get magical seeds which brighten colours
- XXX classification; need a licence to own
- Application- intent (to sell feathers mostly)
- Interview- why you want it, how you care for it and silencing charm proficiency
- If accepted a licence comes 30 days later if not you can reapply 60 days later
- Silencing charm- Silencio (Latin for silence) if done wrong it swells in size and becomes louder
- Feathers- make quills and plucked easily (only 2-4 feathers every 3 months) can be sold if good
- Eggs- patterned, used for decoration (1 egg a week) green eggs are not sold or taken from the bird (they are fertile); 21-28 days to hatch (101-103 Fahrenheit); delicacies in Europe (can be eaten when cooked)
- Babies (fwicks) are grey to black in colour; when 28-30 days old they become bright (squeakers) and start to sing; becomes an adult when first egg is laid (males grow long feather)
