Bloody Evidence
Chapter 2
Kevin sat down at the kitchen table, for dinner. It was pouring rain, as it had been all day. His mom had heated some leftover lasagna, and he was looking forward to it.
His mom, little sister, and dad sat down a few minutes later, said grace, and started to eat.
“Have you gotten a girlfriend, yet?” His father asked.
“Richard, what a silly question,” His mother quickly replied.
“What! I simply wanted to know if my son had a girlfriend!” His father said with a mouth full of leftovers.
“He’s only fourteen!”
Kevin sat there as his parents went back and forth, as they so often did, about if he was old enough to have a girlfriend.
“Well,” Kevin pitched in, “I don’t have a girlfriend,”
“Oh, yeah and why is that?” His mom said, hoping that he would prove her right by saying he was too young.
“Well, I guess I’m not interested in girls,” Kevin said,
“Then who are you interested in?” His sister chimed in with an almost mocking tone.
“Lily! That’s a personal question!” His mom said, almost dropping her fork.
“Well, I don’t know, just not girls,” Kevin said, picking up a piece of lasagna with his fork.

The rest of dinner went almost smoothly, with Kevin’s parents still getting in lots of small arguments, and Kevin having almost two plates full of lasagna.
Kevin went to bed that night with a full stomach and happy thoughts, with no intention of saving a person outside.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kevin woke up that morning to find that it was not pouring rain like it was when he fell asleep but snowing. He rushed out of bed and texted his best friend, Carry.
Kevin got his long johns, and snow pants on and ran outside to the shed. He grabbed his sled and ran out.
“Kevin!!!” Kevin’s friend Carry yelled. Carry had light brown hair and bright blue eyes. He had black snow pants and a green coat.
“Hello Canary,” Kevin said. They walked and talked for a while but stopped when they saw something that made them want to puke.
“Is that…..a hand…..” Carry asked, looking at Kevin with horror.
Kevin bent down to get a closer look. The hand looked fresh. The snow was covered in its blood. The hand had a ring on the middle finger. Kevin stood back up and started walking again, leaving Carry in a state of shock.
“What should we do? Should we go to the cops?” Carry asked, still showing the same emotion on his face.
“No,” Kevin said blankly.
“No? W-Why not? Someone could be dead!”
“Let’s see if we see any more limbs,” Kevin said. “C’mon, let’s go sledding”
Carry still was thinking about the hand, but wanted to go sledding with his best friend. They walked up the hill and put the sled down. To their surprise, there were only a couple of people sledding. Kevin sat down first, as he always did, then Carry sat down behind him.
Carry wrapped his arms around Kevin’s waist and told him he was ready. Carry had gotten into the habit of doing this as the hill they were about to go down was very steep and a trillion feet tall, a real pain to walk up.
“Here we go!” Kevin said as he lifted his feet from the ground and put them in front of him. The wind blew in their faces and blew Carry’s hat off. Carry let go of Kevin and tried to catch his hat.
The wind was so strong that it blew Carry off. He landed on his back with a thud. Struggling to catch his breath, he looked around him. Right in between his legs, clear as day, even with all the snow was a bloody shoe.
Carry looked at it for a while, when he heard Kevin shouting for him at the bottom of the mountain. He slowly walked down the mountain, still shocked at what he had seen earlier and now.
His head got cold, he had forgotten to get his hat. He finally made it to the bottom when he heard something behind him. He quickly turned around.
“AHHHHHH,” He yelled falling to the ground.
“Relax man!” Kevin said standing over top of him. He reached out his hand to help Carry up.
Once Carry got up, he put his hands on Kevin’s shoulders.
“A boot, a bloody boot. On top of the hill. You said we wouldn’t go to the police only unless we found something else.” Carry said looking right at Kevin.
“I said,” Kevin said, sticking his pointer figure in the air, “Only if we found a limb,”
“You can’t ignore that this isn’t something!” Carry said, letting go of Kevin’s shoulders and waving his arms around like a Canary, as he so often did.
“I’m not saying it isn’t,” Kevin said. “Where did you say you saw this boot again?”
“On top of the hill, when I fell off, it was right there!” Carry said, pointing at the hill they just came down from.
They decided to go back up the mountain and see if the boot was still there. It was in fact, still there, and Kevin bent down once again to get a closer look. He picked it up to Carry’s disgust and noticed something inside.
“Look, a note,” Kevin said, picking the note, which was soaked with blood. “If someone finds this I wish them well. There is something you should know. Things aren’t always as they seem. There are always missing” Kevin said. “It stops there.” A piece of the note was gone.
“What is that supposed to mean?!” Carry said, waving his hands once again in the air.
“I don’t know,” Kevin said, standing up.
“Can we at least go to the police please!”
“No,”
“NO?! HOW CAN YOU SAY NO!!! WE’VE FOUND A HAND AND A BLOODY BOOT, WHAT DO WE HAVE TO FIND TO GO TO THE POLICE?!?!?!” Carry yelled.
“More,”
“Jeez.” Carry said, frantically pacing back and forth, trying to not trip on any other piece of the body, with his hands glued to his forehead. “I-I…...What do we do know?”
“Well, I could ask my mom to make some Hot Chocolate,” Kevin said. With that, Carry forgot all about the hand and bloody boot and was now focused on having some hot coco.
The boys walked home, talking about how much work their math teacher, Ms. Emily would probably give them when they returned from winter break and how it was totally unfair.
They walked past a person who was nailing something up on a telephone pole.
“Hi Mrs.Foster!” Carry said.
“Oh, hello Carry,” Mrs. Foster said.
“Whatcha doing?” Kevin asked.
“Oh, well, Lucy didn’t come back from tennis practice last night and she isn’t answering her phone, so I’m putting this to alert the community,” Mrs. Foster pointed to a missing sign.
“If there is anything we can do just ask!” Carry said. And with that they continued to walk home.
His mom, little sister, and dad sat down a few minutes later, said grace, and started to eat.
