Chapter 11
Azkaban: A History
Azkaban existed from around the fifteenth century. It wasn't even a prison these days. It was a mysterious island in the North Sea; it didn't appear on any map. Wizards, witches, and even Muggles believed that it was created by magical means.
Azkaban used to be a home for a little-known sorcerer who called himself Ekrizdis. He was powerful, really powerful. He was believed to be insane and cast the worst kind of Dark Arts. He killed every Muggle passing by, but he died too. Only after his death, the concealment charm he cast was over. The Ministry realized the building. Some people got there to investigate the building. But they refused to talk about what they saw inside, but the least frightening part about the place was Dementors.
The building was abandoned for many years. And the Ministry knew that they should end the place. Still, they were scared of what would happen if they deprived Dementors of their home since they were already impossible to kill.
Once the International Statute of Secrecy had been imposed, the Ministry of Magic felt that the small wizarding prisons that existed up and down the country in various towns and villages posed a security risk, because attempts by incarcerated witches and wizards to break out often led to undesirable bangs, smells and light shows. So the Ministry decided to put all the prisoners in a prison located on a Hebridean island. They made plans for it when Damocles Rowle became Minister for Magic.
Rowle was an authoritarian that wanted Azkaban to change into prison and use the Dementors as guardians. He claimed that the Dementors living there were an advantage, saving the Ministry time, trouble and expense.
Even though people that were experts about the history of Azkaban&Dementors refused, Rowle made his idea come to life and changed Azkaban into a prison. If these prisoners weren't mad before being put into Azkaban; they became soon.
By the time that Eldritch Diggory took over as Minister for Magic, the prison had been operating for fifteen years. Everything was okay, and there were no security problems. When Diggory visited the prison; he saw mad, crazy people and dead ones. So he built a graveyard for the dead prisoners.
Back in London, Diggory established a committee to explore alternatives to Azkaban, or at least to remove the Dementors as guards. Experts explained to him that the only reason the Dementors were confined to the island was that they were being provided with a constant supply of souls on which to feed. If deprived of prisoners, they were likely to abandon the prison and head for the mainland.
Diggory had been so horrified by what he had seen inside Azkaban that he pressed the committee to find alternatives. Before they could reach any decision, however, Diggory caught dragon pox and died. From that time until the advent of Kingsley Shacklebolt, no Minister ever seriously considered closing Azkaban.
Nearly three centuries passed before that record was broken. A young man was successfully smuggled out of the prison when his visiting mother exchanged places with him, something that the blind and loveless Dementors could not detect and would have never expected.
By this time the Dementors had given their allegiance to Lord Voldemort, who could guarantee them scope and freedom hitherto un-tasted.
While Azkaban remains in use as a prison, the guards are now Aurors, who are regularly rotated from the mainland. There has been no breakout since this new system was introduced.

Newt's Birthday
Newton Artemis Fido “Newt” Scamander, Order of Merlin, Second Class, was born on February 24th, 1897. He was a famous Magizoologist and the author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Newt developed interest in Magizoology, starting with his mother's breeding of hippogriffs. He attended Hogwarts, where he was sorted into Hufflepuff. While at Hogwarts, he was sentenced to expulsion though Albus Dumbledore was against this.
Newt spent two years in the Office for House-Elf Relocation in the Ministry of Magic before joining the Beast Division. In 1918 he was hired by Obscurus Books to write Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and it became a best-seller. When going to New York in 1926, he bonded with Tina Goldstein and defied Gellert Grindelwald on three different occasions. He married Tina, and they had at least one child (his grandson Rolf married Luna Lovegood so he’s bound to have had children).
Newt was highly accomplished in charm-work, author skills and Magizoology skills (duh, it’s obvious). He was also good at Defence Against the Dark Arts, Potions, Duelling, History of Magic, Wandlore and Herbology, and could apparate and use non-verbal magic. He even had healing magic! He knew enough of the muggle world to live inside it, and had an indomitable willpower and a lot of courage!
Newt wanted to change the world. He wanted to help the world, and he was intelligent and brave too. He was a bit of all houses, which means he is what any wizard would want to be. He is one of the few Hufflepuffs that had a main role in the Harry Potter series, and he’s so relevant in the wizarding world that he actually got a portrait of himself at Hogwarts!
