In Defense of Professor Severus Snape

Chapter 1

Severus Snape. Potions teacher, former Death Eater, tormentor of Harry Potter. Many do not like Professor Snape because he was exceedingly cruel to Harry, as well as Neville and Hermione. He also showed favoritism to students in his own House; Slytherin. I do not deny that he did those things, but people overlook the good and sad things about him too.

When he was at Hogwarts, he was bullied by James Potter. Snape didn’t do anything to him. James just didn’t like him. And so he bullied him, tormented him, embarrassed him, and, once, nearly killed him. This explains Snape’s vindictiveness toward Harry.

Snape also loved Lily Evans, who married James Potter, his nemesis. She was then killed by Lord Voldemort. He still grieved and loved Lily throughout his life. This explains why he is mean to students; he’s grieving.

Despite being in Slytherin, Severus Snape showed exceeding amounts of bravery and courage. This included lying to the Dark Lord, stopping Quirrell from getting the Sorcerer’s Stone, and doing other dangerous jobs for Dumbledore. Snape’s courage and bravery, (in my opinion), greatly outweighed his Slytherin traits, and shows that he could have been a good Gryffindor,

Snape was also despised by his Father, practically all the Hogwarts Students, Bellatrix Lestrange, and many others. It’s hard to be a good person when so many people hate you, and to have dislike pouring in on you wherever you turn.

If you think about it, Severus Snape lived a pretty horrible life. He grew up in a family where his parents were always yelling at each other, he then joined the Dark Lord, left her to save his love, who then died, went to teach at Hogwarts, got to be hated by students, then had to pretend to be the Dark Lords’ servant, do other jobs for Dumbledore, had to kill Dumbledore on Dumbledore’s own orders, got lots more hate for that, then, he was killed by Lord Voldemort.

So, if you look at it carefully, Snape’s attitude is because of all the pain, suffering, grief, and hatred he endured. It may not have been right for him to be mean to students but he had a really horrible life. Cut him some slack.

Snape also did good things. He spied for Dumbledore, he tried to protect Harry from harm, he gave Harry the sword of Gryffindor. Also, in the film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, at the end, when Lupin turns into a werewolf, Snape shoves Harry, Hermione, and Ron behind him, to protect them. Plus, in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, in an alternate timeline, Snape is collaborating with Hermione and Ron to help Muggle Borns and resist Voldemort. He even sacrifices himself to save Scorpius.

Severus Snape. Hated by all, liked by two, Dumbledore’s spy, and protector of Harry Potter.

I hope this convinced you that Snape was not evil.

"Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living. And above all, those who live without love." -Albus Dumbledore
