Comparing The Magic of Wanda Maximoff and Harry Potter (Informational)
Chapter 8
The MCU and Harry Potter have built two incredible magical universes that seem to outdo each other wherever you look. But which magic is the stronger one? Let’s take a look.
Ranking
I will be ranking each of the characters based on three things: How well their magic performs, how much their magic can do, and how well they would do against each other.
Performance
Let’s look at how well they perform. By perform, I mean that it works well with the wizard or witch, doesn’t go haywire, and how easy it is to perform the magic itself.
Wanda’s magic is definitely connected emotionally. She can use the magic non-verbally and we know that it sometimes goes haywire as she can’t always control what happens. Wanda seems to be able to use the powers with relative ease, but when she gets sad or mad, they can often get out of hand.
Harry Potter's magic isn’t as emotionally connected as Wanda’ magic, and when the characters are mad they usually perform magic to burn off steam. Magic doesn’t usually go haywire, except with Harry and Voldemort’s twin cores, but talking generally, the magic is pretty set in stone with their emotional connection. The magic is usually verbal and gets harder to perform with more spells and difficulty.
I’m giving Harry Potter in this one because the magic isn’t as unpredictable as Wanda’s, giving it some more credibility.
Strength
Wanda’s magic is definitely one of the stronger things we see in the MCU. She fights off Thanos while destroying the Mind Stone, and she is the only Avenger to actually be able to get close to killing Thanos throughout the entire series, with little to no injuries while fighting Thanos. Her magic is incredibly strong.
Harry Potter’s magic is also very powerful. There’s spells for killing, spells for torture, and that’s just showing how powerful the magic is. We see Grindelwald hurling a car towards Tina incredibly quickly, with a little swish of his wrist. The strength of the magic definitely depends on the wizard or witch, so it really varies.
I’m giving the point to Wanda in this one because Wanda’s magic easily outweighs Harry Potter in that she is the only Avenger to get close to killing Thanos whereas both Harry and Dumbledore are able to defeat Voldemort.
How Would They Do Against Each Other?
I’m going to lay out a quick battle between Wanda and Harry, and what could go wrong on both sides.
For one, Harry has to channel his magic through a wand, while Wanda does not. If Wanda breaks Harry’s wand or disarms him, Harry automatically loses. During the books and The Cursed Child, there are only five instances combined in which Harry uses non-verbal magic, and only one of them wandless. If Wanda stops him from moving or speaking, he will most likely be immobilized.
If Harry manages to cast the Imperio spell on Wanda, then Wanda will most likely lose. We see that people frequently are able to immobilize Wanda and she folds, so if he manages to land a stunning spell or anything that could stop her, then she would be done for. Either one could be knocked out easily.
I think it all comes down to how they feel. Harry knows the cost of killing, while Wanda doesn’t mind killing as much. I think that Wanda would win because she would be able to use more force.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Wanda is more powerful than Harry Potter. Her powers are more powerful, and she has the moral ability to defeat him.
