An appreciation of RAVENCLAW
Chapter 1
I’ve been a Ravenclaw since the first Harry Potter book. For me, Ravenclaw just fit! My Patronus is a dolphin, a very intelligent creature, which suits me very well since I’m a Ravenclaw, and one of our traits is intelligence. People might generalize Ravenclaw as the “smart” house, but we’re so much more than that! Ravenclaws are creative and love learning! To love learning doesn’t necessarily mean academics, but anything you’re interested in that you want to know more about! We also value acceptance and individuality. Whereas the other houses might treat a nerd weirdly (eg. Hermione, whom everyone was exasperated with because she always spent time with books) we accept them and welcome them with open arms! Our House also has the Founder with the most interesting (but tragic) history. Plus our Common Room is totally awesome; it has wide, sweeping windows, lots of books, and an airy feel. Several famous witches and wizards have also been sorted into Ravenclaw, including Garrick Ollivander (the famous wandmaker), Ignatia Wildsmith (the inventor of Floo Powder), Millicent Bagnold (the Minister for Magic from 1980-1990), Filius Flitwick (Charms professor at Hogwarts), and Luna Lovegood! One thing I’m sad about is that in the movies our House colors were changed from Blue and Bronze, to Blue and Silver, as well as our Eagle being replaced by a Raven. While Ravenclaws might sometimes seem aloof and distant, it’s because we need time and space to think, read, or imagine. Two of our traits are Intelligence and Wisdom. Both of these are very handy, because you can have a lot of knowledge, but make bad decisions without wisdom, and you can have wisdom but not have the knowledge to use it. We’re also witty, which makes conversations great with us since we know the exact place to make a joke or Harry Potter comparison! Our fashion sense can be either excellent or terrible (eg. Cho Chang and Gilderoy Lockhart were always very stylish, but Xenophilius Lovegood and Garrick Ollivander had a very cobbled-together appearance). According to J.K. Rowling, Ravenclaw is roughly associated with the element of air, which fits with our Common Room and Animal. Ravenclaws are always helpful in a problem or situation because we can think outside the box. Now go and be Ravenclawesome!
We are Smart. We are Creative. We are Accepting. We are RAVENCLAW!
