Chapter 12
Clothes in the Wizarding World
Believe it or not, clothing misdemeanours have been one of the most common infractions of the International Statute of Secrecy. According to the ISS, "When mingling with Muggles, wizards and witches will adopt an entirely Muggle standard of dress, which will conform as closely as possible to the fashion of the day. Clothing must be appropriate to the climate, the geographical region and the occasion. Nothing self-altering or adjusting is to be worn in front of Muggles,". Then if this is what witches and wizards are meant to wear in the Muggle world, what do they normally walk around in all day? Well, for starters, robes. Robes are the standard uniform for the wizarding world, sometimes worn with a pointed hat. Robes are always worn at formal occasions. At Hogwarts, students have black robes with their house colors on badges and scarves, but many have everyday robes that reflects their own personal interests. I have a particularly nice deep blue robe back at home, though I do have to Scourgify it whenever I leave the house -- cat hair. Women's dresses tend to be longer in the wizarding world, too. These old fashioned styles go all the way back to the seventeenth century, when wizards first went into hiding. Throughout the years, it has become a matter of cultural pride for many -- though sometimes they demonstrate it by wearing their everyday clothes in the Muggle world, leading Muggles to believe they are cult members.
Wonderful. Of course, Muggle fashion has influenced the wizarding world in many ways, and some only don their robes when it's necessary. For more information on clothes in the wizarding world, I suggest you stop by Madam Malkins Robes for All Occasions.
