Chapter 1
When Laura stepped a foot in the airport she knew that it wasn’t going to be a normal vacation. She had a mission, to find Carla and go away. There was only one problem: Barcelona was a very big city and she had no idea what Carla looked like. Her parents were in front of her checking in for the flight. It was a very long flight, seven hours from JFK airport in New York to El Prat in Barcelona. Once she was in the plane she began to think. It wasn’t fair the rest of the team could stay here having a mission inside of the United States and she, one of the less experienced ones, had to go find a new member for the team. Just one year ago she had known that she had abilities, special ones. This was caused by a strange mutation in her cells, created by fairies, in her case. This gave her the power to have wings, if she needed or to magic. Like always everything has a price. She had to train her abilities and escape from dark creatures that chase and destroy people like her and mortals. Her dream was to become the leader of the center of New York. That was the greatest honor.
“Honey, you don’t look well. Is something wrong?” Her mother asked. She didn’t know anything about her abilities, but she suspected that something was wrong.
“Nothing mom. I was just thinking about our trip.” Laura told her, hoping that she believed her lie.
“Laura, don’t lie to me. I know what is happening to you, I just hoped you would trust me more. I know that you have faerie abilities and I also know that you have been training with Mister Balock and his team” She said. Laura was speechless.
“For how long have you known?”
“Since you were born. Look this is a family heritage and as you are probably thinking I am also like you, a faerie.”
“Why didn’t you ever tell me or helped me? It’s hard to control your abilities, especially if you are the only air faerie.”
“Well that is why we are going to Barcelona, that girl I know her mother. She is also an air faerie. I never told you because faeries are not supposed to be married to regular mortals that don’t see the real world. And honey, your bow needs to be cleaned.” Then Laura's mother left.
Laura looked at her silver bow. It was very special to her. This bow was a gift from her friends at the center, they gave it to her when she finished her first quest in new york. It was a little dirty, but she cleaned it fast. Then she took her place in the plane. Maybe this quest wasn’t that bad at all.
After eight long hours of waiting the plane finally landed in Spain. Laura could not believe how lucky she was, not a single monster or dark creature was in the plane. She went outside with her parents and took a taxi to the hotel where they would be staying for a week. Barcelona was clearly different from the United states. Most of the things were not new and it all looked full with color. They finally arrived at the hotel, after everything was set Laura tried to go on her quest to find Clara. Her mother stopped her.
“Young lady where do you think you are going?” She told her.
“On my mission, bye mom.” Laura said to her.
“Oh no, honey we need to talk. About many things. You need to know that Barcelona has a lot of dark creatures that you have never seen before and I want you to be prepared.”
“What kind of creatures, you know I learned everything about the creatures before coming here. And what do you care now about, you won’t help me anyway.”
“Your dad is going to get worried if you just disappear and you have probably no idea of how to mind control.”
“Well because it’s illegal, but you probably don’t care. Bye Mom!” Then she left.
Once she was outside she began to think of a plan. At the center they had told her that every Faerie has some face characteristics that mortals don’t have. It could be their eyes or their nose or even their ears. So Laura began to observe the people around her. None of the girls looked like a faerie to her. So she kept looking. After doing the most famous and full part of Barcelona she began to look in one of the parts of the city where people have their normal life. The streets were almost empty and the people that were there were definitely not faeries. She noticed a girl around her age walking fast and a man following her. That wasn’t good. The girl was very pretty, with dark hair in a bandana and big brown eyes. She looked like a faerie.
“Are you Ok?” Laura asked her in her middle school spanish.
“ No, donna esque aquest tio mig biog m’esta seguint.” The girl replied to her.
“Sorry my spanish isn’t that good.” Laura excused herself.
“It wasn’t spanish. It’s catalan the language most people speak in Barcelona. Can you stay with me and pretend that we are friends? That man is following me and it makes me uncomfortable.” She asked her kindly. Laura noticed her catalan accent.
“Sure, I’m Laura by the way.” Laura smiled at her.
“Nice to meet you, I’m Clara.” She said to Laura.
Laura smiled and was happy to have found her. Then her face changed to shock she was being followed by a demon. That was not good and it seemed that she didn’t knew anything about her family and powers. She took her bow out.
“Whoaa! Girl you can put that thing away. We don’t need to kill him you know. And besides you can’t have weapons in Spain. This in not America.” Carla said.
The man saw the bow and started to walk faster.
“A demon, I knew it!” Laura half screamed.
“Are you insane? Demons don’t exist!” Clara asked her.
“Yes they do, and there is no point in discussing this now. Look you are a faerie and demons kill faeries, actually they kill any one. I am a faerie too. We can’t waste time we need to run!”
The two girls started running. The demon followed the blonde and brunette girls. There were almost no magical beings in Barcelona and he wanted to have fresh fae blood.
Laura turned left into a street.
“No, Laura. That street has a dead end!” Carla screamed.
“Well, we need to find another way to get out, because he is coming.”
It was too risky to shoot him from here.
Laura decided that she had only one option. She took Carla under her armpits and let her Faerie wings open. Then she jumped up to the roof of a house. Her violet wings were still open and Carla was staring at them.
“So you weren’t lying?” She asked Laura.
“No, you are a faerie as well. An air faerie, like me. Now what weapon do you want? On our way to somewhere safe we are going to be attacked.” She replied and handed her a bronce knife and a silver sword.
“I’ll take the sword. But don’t normal people like me see this?”
“They can’t see it, they’re mortals and see what they’re told to see and you are not a mortal. Have you read Percy Jackson?”
Before she could reply Laura took her down and hid her wings. They both started walking heading to Clara’s house. Clara fixed her bandana that fell off during the flight.
“So, you said that my mother is a faerie?” Clara questioned Laura breaking the silence.
“Yes, she was a friend of my mother. They married regular humans and because it was illegal they never wanted you to know.”
“And how did you find out then?”
“I met the center, they trained there and somehow adopted me. I just found out today that my mother was a faerie.”
“Is there a center in Barcelona?”
“No, that is why I came. We need you in the center, in New York. I’m the only air faerie there.”
Soon they arrived at her apartment. It was near the center of Barcelona.
“Laura, before we go in. My mother can freak out sometimes. Please, don't say anything about the faerie thing, I will tell her and then you will proceed.” Clara begged her before opening the door.
“Ok, I will.” Laura said.
Clara opened the door and stepped inside the house. The apartment was small, but for a three person family it was enough.
“Clara, is that you?” A voice asked in catalan. It was her mother.
“Yes, Mama, a friend came, she speaks only english.” Carla answered her.
“You don’t have any english speaking friends. I told you to don’t speak with strangers on the internet.”
“I met her today! She saved me! And she told me everything you never told me!” Clara yelled.
“What? From what did she save you? What did she tell you?” She was screaming as well. It seemed strange to see both screaming, Clara seemed a very calm person.
“Demons” Laura interrupted the screaming and yelling to each other.
“Demons don’t exist.” Clara's mother said.
“Yeah they do. I am a faerie, like you and your daughter. My name is Laura Priore. My mother Cecilia Priore worked with you years ago.”
Silence. Not a word was to hear. Carla’s mother looked at her coldly. Then she smiled at her.
“I thought she was dead. Why did you come to Barcelona? A Lot of monsters and demons live here.” She told to Laura
“Well, at the center we found out that there was a Faerie that needed our help. I was given the mission to go find Carla and bring her there. She needs training.” Laura answered to her.
“You could teach me Laura.” Clara said speaking for the first in a normal voice.
“I could, but it would take months and even I’m not that good to teach you. Me and Carla are going back to my hotel and find my mother. She’ll convince you Ms.?”
“You can call me Eleonora. Go now, later in the evening it is the more monsters there will be.” Clara’s mother said.
Both girls rushed down to the entrance. Clara opened the door and stepped outside. It was already dark and it looked very pretty. Laura wasn’t very sure if it was safe, but went out anyway. They started walking, just like normal people, but peace did not last much. Now that Clara knew the truth more monsters and demons would come. A tall woman was walking behind them. Laura looked worried at Clara and Clara assumed that it wasn’t a good sign. Almost no one was in the streets so the woman had no problem showing her real form. She was a demon, ugly and horrible. Still she looked human. The demon began running towards them. Laura took her bow out of her bag and began shooting at the monster. Clara went behind the monster and put her sword through its heart. The monster was dead and both girls started running.
“That was easy! It’s fun to kill monsters.” Clara said, “Laura you look worried, is something wrong?”
“It shouldn’t have been that easy. Normally they fight back, unless they have a bigger thing prepared.” Laura answered.
“Well then we better get out of here, soon”
“That is what they want us to do. No, we will fly to the hotel.”
Laura showed Clara how to open her wings. That took a lot of time. Then Clara managed to open them, like her wings they were violet. The only difference was the pattern that Laura had, was in Clara’s wings withe.
“Now I’m going to help you to fly, you are going to fall, probably. So I will hold you” Laura explained to her.
Cara nodded. Then both started moving their wings and jumped high. Laura had no problem staying in the air, but Clara almost fell down. Luckily she managed with Laura's assistance to fly to the hotel. Once they landed she hugged Laura and whispered a low “thank you”. Then they entered the hotel. Laura’s mother was standing besides the reception.
“There you both are!” She greeted them. She looked at Clara and said: “So you are the famous Clara? My daughter has talked about you a lot.”
“Yes, I guess. We need you to convince my mom so that I can move to the US.” Clara answered.
“ Well, I’ll go. You two need to stay here.” Then she left them both, giving Laura the key to her room.
Laura made a signal to Clara, so that she would come with her. They both stepped into the elevator. Laura pressed the button to the third floor. They waited in silence to arrive at their floor. When they stepped outside the elevator they moved to Laura’s room. She opened the door and entered.
“ In case I come with you, how is America?” Clara asked.
“Well, it’s different from Europe. Everything is big. Obviously there is always discrimination you have to deal with. In my case, there isn't much. I’m withe, straight and an atheist. I just get stereotyped for being blonde with blue eyes.” Laura answered.
“ Will they accept me in the center, even if I’m not white?” Clara asked.
“ Yes, what we do is help people or magical beings and we don’t discriminate against people, never!” Laura replied.
Clara smiled, then she said: “ My mom is going to say yes. I know it.”
“Let’s hope it’s true.”
Laura’s mother rushed through the streets of Barcelona. It had been years since she saw Eleonora last time. She was her closest friend. Then she stayed here in Barcelona. Laura’s mother knocked at the door. A familiar person opened the door. Eleonora. She looked at Laura’s mother and said: “ I had a feeling that you would come Cecila.”
“ We have something to discuss. Your daughter. She needs training. You should come back with us to the US.” She told Eleonora.
“We could open a center here. It would be very hard to move to the US and there is no law that plays against it. There are more like them here in Spain. They need help as well.”
“ That is ridiculous! Clara is the only faerie in Spain.”
“She is the only one that is tracked. There are others. This is my only option.”
“Fine, but we need to tell the director where the center will be. It’s not like you have a powerful magic source.” Cecilia told her.
“ I have. Now we will go and tell the girls.”
“Well, we need to think of an excuse to stay here. And the girls, they have an opinion as well. They’re just 13. They have to go to school and try to have a life.”
“We will make it happen.”
The both women went outside and walked to the hotel. There Clara and Laura were laughing and watching a movie. When their mothers walked in Clara asked if she was going with Laura to New York.
“No, you are staying here. And here me out before you start complaining. You and Laura are staying here, we are opening a new center in Spain.” Eleonora replied.
“Nooo! Mom you can’t do this I can’t leave the New York center.” Laura cried.
“Laura, don't be a little kid. You are going to have a lot of fun here and you can still have contact with your friends in New York. And it’s not like you have a choice.” Cecila told her.
The two moms finally convinced them and they soon started to organize the search of a place to open the center.
Six months later, a blonde girl with a red bandana was standing in front of the door to the tribunal of the Magic world. Next to her a dark haired girl was playing with her silver sword. The sword once belonged to her, but exchanged for the bandana for the sword when they finished their first missions. Inside the tribunal their mothers were showing the director and the leaders of each center in the world the center of Barcelona. The doors opened and a man guided them inside. They were about to give the final verdict.
“For the security of our world, we have decided that the center in Barcelona is to remain open” The director said.
Everyone clapped and Eleonora and Cecila were given the objects of the leaders of the center of Spain. From that day the center began working. New people appeared everyday. Laura never finished her mission, but it was worth it. Now one day she would become the leader of the center in Barcelona. Like she always dreamed of.
“Honey, you don’t look well. Is something wrong?” Her mother asked. She didn’t know anything about her abilities, but she suspected that something was wrong.
